Damien Sandow Needs to Turn Face Before the Novelty Wears Off

More from WWE

Damien Sandow went through an extremely rough year on the WWE roster following his victory in the Money in the Bank ladder match in June of 2013. The briefcase technically hindered him for the rest of the year, as he slowly fell into obscurity and was then defeated by John Cena when he looked to cash in his contract for the World Heavyweight Championship. The plan was already in place for Cena and Randy Orton to combine the WHC and WWE Championship, so Sandow really had no shot of ever cashing in.

From there, the fall of Damien Sandow became a downward spiral.

His next role was to play the “Bad Santa” role against Mark Henry in the Christmas edition of Raw on December 23. While it was a very entertaining match that the two put on, Sandow predictably took a loss.

After that, Sandow sunk into the ground of the WWE roster. He would start jobbing to mid-card talents and also would take on an impersonation gimmick that saw him imitate LeBron James, Lance Stephenson, among others. While Sandow kept getting buried deeper into the ground, he kept a consistent spot on TV. It meant he must have been doing something good to impress people backstage, right?

Sandow eventually got the opportunity of being The Miz’s “Stunt Double.” The former Real World star had recently undergone a gimmick change following his return from shooting another straight-to-DVD movie, so he created his little entourage. This role would turn out to be some of Sandow’s (Now Mizdow) best work since becoming a WWE Superstar.

At first, Mizdow’s role would be to fill in for Miz in matches here and there. He also would start helping Miz win his matches via distractions. Eventually, Mizdow started mimicking every movement of Miz’s while he was speaking and even while he was in the ring. It was comedy gold!

This role of Mizdow’s went over so well that WWE has kept him in this spot for a few months now. It has even gotten him over with the WWE fans.

He has pretty much perfected the Stunt Double gimmick. It’s hilarious and wildly entertaining. However, as with everything in WWE – it has a shelf life. Things can only last so long before they get stale or the novelty wears off.

Over the past week, tension has been teased between Miz and Mizdow. The announcers have been pointing out that the protege has been taking some of the spotlight away from the A-lister, but Miz hasn’t looked to acknowledge it. He still goes out there and takes full credit for anything that Mizdow does for him.

Eventually, we’re going to see a face turn for Mizdow, which will make the crowd go wild. The key thing here is that it needs to be done while this Stunt Double character is hot. If they wait too long and the novelty of Damien Mizdow wears off, no one will care that much.

Once Mizdow breaks away from Miz, a pretty entertaining feud should go on between the two. They’re both gold on the microphone and pretty solid wrestlers. The question has to be asked, though – would Mizdow come out on top once it’s all said and done?

As we touched on earlier, WWE buried him into the ground for the better part of this year. They may want to add more credibility to Miz’s character instead of giving life to Mizdow’s, who the company seemed to feel comfortable having in a comedy spot. They may feel that they have no idea what they want to do with the Stunt Double as a mid-card face, so they may just bury him back into the ground as a low-card good guy this time around. At that point, all hope would be lost for Damien Mizdow in WWE. It would be best for him to move on from the company.

The handling of a Damien Sandow face turn would be interesting to watch. Let’s see what WWE chooses to do next.
