For months, we heard Roman Reigns was the favorite to win the 2015 Royal Rumble. We also heard that he would be the one to take down Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31 for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. I believe these rumors first came out around July of 2014.
Well, these rumors came true last night at the Wells Fargo Center. Roman Reigns won the 2015 Royal Rumble and will face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 31 for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
I like Reigns. He has made some improvements and has the potential to be great. However, it’s just not his time yet.
The pop that the former Shield member gets from the crowds is okay, but nowhere near what John Cena, Daniel Bryan, Dolph Ziggler, and Dean Ambrose receive. WWE has tried manufacturing the crowd support for Reigns but it has failed. Tonight put the exclamation point on that.
Reigns started off as a terrible speaker on the microphone. His lines came off very awkwardly and left the crowds kind of confused as to whether to cheer or stay silent. Over the past few months though, he has made some improvements and is about average as a talker.
My main issue is with Reigns’ in-ring work. I will admit that it has improved a little bit from where it was during his time with The Shield. He has a few more moves to use from his arsenal. Do we know if he can work a match longer than ten minutes, though? Absolutely not. That’s kind of scary to have to worry about with a guy who is set to headline a WrestleMania.

Brock Lesnar is a beast and a freak of nature. He does not need a complete arsenal of wrestling moves to get over because he is a terrific performer in the ring. Therefore, he can carry a match. Reigns is going to have to learn to carry his own load fast. If that potential Last Man Standing match with Big Show actually does happen, Reigns needs to show what he’s worth. If he fails to perform well, this WrestleMania 31 main event could have the potential to be one of the worst.
It’s just not Reigns’ time yet. WWE stuck to their guns and put the ball in the hands of a guy who needs more time. They obviously didn’t factor in what the fans thought and turned away many last night.
WrestleMania 31 will take place two months from Thursday night. That means that Roman Reigns has two months to continue to evolve and prove us all wrong. Let’s hope he does.
