WWE WrestleMania 31: Why Fastlane Rematches May Hurt the Under-Card

WWE WrestleMania 31 is just five weeks away. While the main event matches of the show will be great, the under-card may have an issue.

More from John Cena

The WWE Fastlane pay-per-view concluded last night that had plenty of WWE WrestleMania 31 implications. The show pretty much laid out the card for the show of shows. However, it may have been laid out a little too well.

A good chunk of last night’s matches did not end clean or left you saying “alright, we know this is not the end of the feud.” While having maybe one or two matches end like that is fine, having five matches end in that fashion is too much.

Here is what we may be looking forward to seeing for a second (or third) time at WrestleMania 31.

  • Goldust vs. Stardust
  • The Usos vs. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd
  • Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus*
  • Nikki Bella vs. Paige
  • Bad News Barrett vs. Dean Ambrose
  • John Cena vs. Rusev

Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus is included on there because the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion will likely face The Celtic Warrior or Dolph Ziggler next month.

If all of these six matches get confirmed for WrestleMania 31, it would be an overkill of rematches. We would be seeing something that we have seen before so many times that the under-card would be weak and boring.

Goldust vs. Stardust will likely feature the younger brother going over in round two. However, we have already seen The Bizarre One win with a clean roll-up pin. Why should people care if we have seen the result play out before.

The Usos vs. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd was a terrific match. If the plan is to do a rematch at WrestleMania 31, they will need to top this. While they have the ability to do so, fans may roll their eyes at the fact that they have seen this before.

Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus is a WrestleMania match that we’ve seen twice before at the show of shows. Their matches have lasted a total of five minutes combined, which underwhelmed fans. Seeing a third installment of this feud would be uninspiring and possibly not attract the interest of the fans.

Nikki Bella and Paige had a decent match at Fastlane. When Nikki pulled the tights of Paige, we knew that this was heading for round two. If that is going to be at WrestleMania 31, they will need to top their performance from last night. Whether they can or can’t is not the issue, it’s if WWE gives them enough time. With so many other big matches scheduled for next month, it will be difficult to make happen.

Bad News Barrett and Dean Ambrose put on an okay match with each other last night. Their in-ring chemistry wasn’t anything to applaud over, but it wasn’t terrible. Ambrose getting disqualified for being overly aggressive sets this up for round two, which he alluded to earlier in the night that he wants the title for WrestleMania. While these two have the ability to put on a very good match, last night’s Monday Night Raw-esque contest was not a good start.

John Cena vs. Rusev is the one match that may be fine to see a second time because of The Bulgarian Brute’s undefeated streak being on the line. Since Cena has been the face of WWE for over a decade, fans know that he has the ability to end the streak of Rusev. This will keep the WWE Universe involved in the match while rooting for Cena to be victorious. The nostalgia factor of Cena possibly winning the United States Championship will also be there too.
