Should Samoa Joe Be Allowed To Wrestle For WWE And ROH On TV?
By Jack Crosby
Now that Ring of Honor has a national television deal, should Samoa Joe still be appearing for the company?
Ring of Honor, after years of surviving as the top independent wrestling organization in the United States, finally caught a huge break on Wednesday with the news that they’ve inked a television deal with Destination America. Of course, one of the questions that immediately came to mind was whether or not WWE should let Joe continue to work for his old company, given then fact that they’re now on national TV.
The simple answer to that is: No. No they should not.
First off, this might not be much of an issue to begin with. Earlier today on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez noted that he’s of the impression that WWE was allowing Samoa Joe to appear for Ring of Honor, just so long as he would not be seen on a national television outlet. Sure, he’s booked for upcoming television tapings, but that was under the assumption that they would only be airing in syndication as they already have been for quite some time now.
Do Triple H and Vince McMahon really care if people see Joe on ROH TV at 1:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning when they’re probably just stumbling in from the bar? No, not really. But do they care if Joe is plastered on a national television channel –no matter how small of a following it might have– on a show right next to the company that he’s spent a good amount of the last 10 years with in TNA? Yes, that’s a problem, and a problem that they don’t want to deal with.
So, basically, Triple H needs to get on the phone with Ring of Honor ASAP and inform them as politely as he can that they can no longer use Samoa Joe for television. Then, he needs to have a nice sit-down with Joe and figure some things out. Although, Joe may already know the deal. Maybe someone tipped Joe off of this impending Destination America announcement and something has already been worked out; who knows?
To be quite honest, I was not a fan of this special deal that Samoa Joe received anyway. I understand how unprecedented it is, but the fact of the matter is that Samoa Joe has waited a long time to have a shot at the big stage and he finally has just that. He might be very loyal to the people that he’s worked with once before, but right now his focus should be on making himself as big of a star as he can possibly be under the WWE banner. With his shirts selling out so quickly and the response he got at NXT Takeover, that should have opened his eyes to what can happen if he puts 100% into this.
If Joe maybe wants to make a few appearances at one of the awesome Ring of Honor house shows over the summer, that’s fantastic for him if that’s what he wants, and maybe that still happens.
But as for seeing Joe in front of Ring of Honor cameras…No, that dream died on Wednesday afternoon.
