Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetusya Naito

Result: Tetsuya Naito defeats Hiroshi Tanahashi via pinfall.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Naito came out with a mask and business-looking attire on.

Tanahashi began with a hold of Naito and knocked him down. The two then traded multiple punches in the corner. Tanahashi hit a drag that got Naito out of the ring.

Naito ran and laid in the middle of the ramp, clutching his knee. He got up and made his way back to the ring slowly. He stepped in and went back out twice.

Tanahashi hit a few hard elbows before being throw out by Naito with his legs. He threw NJPW’s top star into the barricade and put him on one of the announce tables. He hit a neck-breaker onto the table! Tanahashi got back into the ring at the count of 18 (NJPW goes to 20 seconds for a count out).

Naito continued with a leg lock around Tanahashi’s head. The latter tried working back but got hit with a neck breaker. He knocked down the ref for not counting to three.

Naito got Tanahashi into a hold, who worked back with a take down of the heel. He hit a flip off the second rope for a near-fall.

Tanahashi got Naito out of the ring. After doing so, he jumped on him from the top rope.

With part of his body on the railing, Tanahashi hit a leg drag that looked to hurt Naito. He went for a second drag into the ring until Naito hit a dropkick.

Naito hit another neck breaker and put Tanahashi into the Koji Clutch. After awhile, the latter got his legs onto the ropes to break the hold.

Tanahashi would twist and slam Naito’s leg and put him into the Lion Tamer. He got to the ropes to break the hold.

Tanahashi went to the top rope but got hit multiple times by Naito. He hit a Frankensteiner off the second rope and a dropkick to the back. He connected with a German Suplex for a near-fall.

Tanahashi hit a neck breaker and a move off the ropes. He then climbed back up and went for the Frog Splash but Naito put the knees up!

The two traded elbows until Tanahashi hit a big German Suplex. This set up a neck breaker and suplex from Naito for the win.

Following the match, Naito beat down the referee and a ringside worker. He got on the microphone and gloated to the crowd.

Rob’s Note: Wow, what a match. This shouldn’t have been unexpected, as these are two excellent workers. Tanahashi seemingly can’t put on anything worse than a 4-star match. Naito put in just as much work and delivered a great showing.

These two will both be around for the majority of this tournament. Whether one of them makes the G1 Climax finals remains to be seen.
