After watching the last couple of months of WWE television, I’m left asking one question: is WWE’s greatest attribute also its greatest detriment in former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar?
Let me explain a myself little. Lesnar was, allegedly, the man everyone wanted earlier in the year. In the run up to WrestleMania, there was a lot of talk of whether he will sign a new contract with the WWE. It was reported that he spoke to UFC about a return there, but in the end he chose to renew with his current employer, which is fine.
What I’m not a big fan of is the way he’s booked as the unstoppable monster, to the detriment of the rest of the roster at times.
Lesnar destroyed John Cena to get his hands on the title late last year, defended the belt sporadically (and only appeared a limited number of times), and lost it to Seth Rollins via the MITB cash in. From this, Lesnar has been booked as nothing more than an untouchable beast.
In the late 90’s heyday of ECW, Paul Heyman booked Taz as an unstoppable monster. At least that unstoppable monster was able to make you believe his opponents had the smallest of chances to beat him before he slapped on that fabled submission hold.
Every match that Brock is part of sees him throw around his opponent like a 1980’s jobber, but is that booking philosophy to the detriment of his matches and the man he’s facing?
If Rollins, as the champion, is thrown about like a rag doll, that makes Lesnar look amazing. However, it also makes Seth look so weak it’s detrimental to the entire company. Why do people want to continually see the man at the top treated that way, only to then be expected to believe him to be the best?
To see the man that’s supposed to be at the pinnacle of your company get treated that way will eventually make fans turn off from him. It also makes the title worthless and the man that holds that belt look like the jobber you’re booking him as.
In recent months the only man that’s looked anywhere near to standing up to Brock has been the returning Undertaker. Whilst booking him in a feud with the Deadman, the man he took the streak away from, is a great way to take him away from the title picture, eventually he’ll be back for the belt.
But if they keep booking the champion, whoever that may be, as the underdog against the Beast, the title he so greatly seeks will be worthless.
If you look at the main title picture in the world’s other major companies, both champion and challenger are booked strongly, with the title being the focus of the company, not an individual wrestler. You only have to look at the recent ROH Title match. Jay Lethal wrestled to a one hour draw with Roderick Strong. Both men put in stellar performances and the company looks strong on the back of it. Can you ever imagine that kind of match for the biggest belt in WWE ?
If the current trend continues, how long will it be before fans begin to get bored and start to switch off?
There’s only so many times I need to see a champion get treated like a rookie in the Performance Center. There’s only so many times I want to hear a crowd counting along to the number of unanswered suplexes that Lesnar can throw. If you need him to be in the title picture and book his matches that way, give him the belt and never take it off him!
