Eva Marie’s Rumored Push Shows WWE Hasn’t Learned from Past Mistakes
Eva Marie is in the process of receiving a push to become WWE’s next top Diva. However, doing this would be repeating previous mistakes.
Back in April, we noted that WWE was looking to give Eva Marie a push to make her the face of the Divas division. She has the looks that WWE wants but her in-ring skills were horrendous. She displayed them all too often on the main roster, which turned into a disaster.
Over a year later, Eva received in-ring training from former WWE Superstar Brian Kendrick. While the Total Divas star does look better in the ring, she’s not ready for a big push.

Eva has the look that Vince McMahon and other WWE officials want. She’s beautiful and has a ring presence. In other words, she’s the total Diva (pun intended). Unfortunately, the mindset of the WWE executives still seems to be that looks matter over how well women can wrestle; this is even with Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch all added to the roster.
This push for Eva seems to be starting with NXT and Total Divas.
On NXT, she received an exotic entrance and has won her matches. She even got an open microphone a few times to speak to the crowd. This led to some of the most ear-piercing boos you’ll ever hear from a wrestling crowd. It’s safe to say the “push” wasn’t off to a great start.
The worst may come at the NXT TV taping tomorrow, when she faces Carmella.
Wrestling News also noted that at the last NXT TV taping, Eva received another harsh reaction. She apparently forgot to kick out at two during her match with Billie Kay. However, with the referee knowing how the match was supposed to end, held up his hand to the crowd to signal she kicked out. It will be interesting to see how this is put together when it airs.
Then there’s Total Divas. E! posted a teaser for next week’s episode that seems to center around Eva. The storyline for the episode is “she’s always been loved by the fans but you’ll see why that’s all about to change.” This faux statement is likely WWE continuing a babyface push to get some sympathy behind her, almost like she’s being billed as an underdog.
Fans aren’t going to buy that.
If WWE continues to go this route with her, it will show they still haven’t learned from past mistakes with pushes.
The best case example of this is what happened to Roman Reigns.
Throughout last summer, all everyone heard was how the former Shield man was being pushed to the sky. Fans read this and began to boo him at events.
These rumors came true, though, as Reigns had a perfect winter that featured a Royal Rumble win and help from The Rock at the show. Normally that would generate a huge roar but since WWE was “shoving Reigns down everyone’s throats,” the cousins were booed out of the building.
WWE then faced the task of getting support behind Reigns before he main-evented WrestleMania 31 with Brock Lesnar. He was seen as the “chosen one” so why wouldn’t they? This didn’t work, though, as Reigns got booed by the Levi’s Stadium crowd. It was embarrassing to see the babyface in what was built as the main event of the biggest show getting such a bad reaction. WWE realized their mistake a few days earlier, as they changed the main event from Reigns winning to Seth Rollins cashing in Money in the Bank and getting his moment.

WWE made the proper call in the end but this was the case of giving someone a push who simply wasn’t ready for it. Tunnel vision was nearly the culprit once again.
Another example of this is Bobby Lashley but not quit the magnitude of Reigns. He received a push by winning the horrendous ECW December to Dismember Elimination Chamber match in 2006. This was despite Paul Heyman wanting CM Punk to win this bout because of the potential he saw in him. Plus he was over with the fans. McMahon and others saw the look in Lashley but his lack of mic skills hurt him.
There was also Jack Swagger, who received a quick main event push about five years ago. He was being booked similar to how Kurt Angle was; Swagger got the patriotic amateur wrestling gimmick and even took on the Ankle Lock (renamed the Patriot Lock) as his finisher.
While Swagger had the look, he just didn’t match the hype that WWE built for him. His mic skills lacked and he certainly wasn’t Kurt Angle. This led to him crashing and burning by becoming a low-card star in 2015.
Eva Marie is in danger of falling into the same group as the preceding current and former WWE Superstars. This is not to say she can’t improve because she’s certainly made strides. However, if WWE doesn’t realize what the mistake they’re about to make soon, Eva will be irreparably damaged.
