Randy Orton vs. Sheamus kicked off WWE’s SummerSlam PPV! Who came out on top between The Viper and the Money in the Bank holder?

The SummerSlam action kicked off with “The Viper” Randy Orton’s familiar theme, and he looks pumped to get the show going. Sheamus, still carrying his Money in the Bank briefcase, looked more smug than ever coming down to ringside. A recap of two weeks ago when Sheamus cost Orton the World Heavyweight championship was shown, followed by Orton’ returning the favor a few moments later.  The match began with Orton going for an RKO right off the bat, which caused Sheamus to flee the ring. He grabbed a microphone and stood on the announcers’ table, telling the crowd that he “does not look stupid”, until Orton interrupted him and threw him into the ring.

Orton on the attack, hitting Sheamus with a big dropkick that sends him to the floor once again. Recovering, Sheamus threw Orton into the ring post. Sheamus hit Orton with a flying knee from the top turnbuckle and proceeded to lay on the heavy offense with punches and kicks. Sheamus maintaining control with a rear chinlock, but Orton begins to fight out of it until taking a big knee to the midsection. Sheamus firmly in control, stalking Orton around the ring in a way we’d typically expect from The Viper.

More chinlocks from Sheamus as the pace slows down considerably, followed by a big knee lift. Orton fought back, missed a powerslam attempt but caught Sheamus with his patented neckbreaker. Orton tried for his middle-rope DDT, but instead T-bone suplexed to the floor. Nice spot! Back in the ring, Orton taunted Sheamus by messing up his hair, which the crowd ate up. But that made Sheamus angry and he regained control, locking Orton in a version of his Texas Cloverleaf. Orton’s head is busted open slightly, he’s bleeding onto the mat; but he managed to fight out of the hold and hit his powerslam for a two-count.

Orton took a hard boot  in the corner, but he recovered quickly enough to catch Sheamus with a DDT from the top turnbuckle. The crowd went wild as Orton signaled for the RKO, but Sheamus rolled onto the apron. He caught Orton coming in and went for the “Ten Beats of the Bodhran”, but when the crowd began to count he paused. That gave Orton the chance to recover, and when Sheamus went for a slingshot shoulderblock it was Orton who caught him with the RKO! But he couldn’t get the pin as Sheamus rolled outside the ring.  Orton brought him back, and set up for the punt kick! We haven’t seen it in years! But Sheamus ducked out of the way and hit him with the “White Noise” for a close two-count.  Orton went for the Brogue Kick, but missed. Orton tried for the RKO, but Sheamus fought out of it, then hit Orton with a Brogue Kick in the corner, followed by another Brogue Kick to score the victory.

Travis’ Thoughts: Strong match, but not all that different from the dozens of other times these two have faced one another. At least they kept the rest holds to a tolerable level this time. The big surprise is Sheamus scoring the clean victory. It will be interesting to see if this begins a push for him leading up to his cash-in of the MITB briefcase.
