Should Sting Get a WWE World Heavyweight Championship Reign?

After his shocking return this past Monday on Raw, Sting is the next in line for Seth Rollins’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions. With that being said, is The Stinger beating Rollins “best for business”?

After Sting became Seth Rollins’ new statue in the final segment, he then gave the hand-picked champion a Stinger Splash and held the WWE title above his head, which is something I thought I would never see.

As a WCW guy through and through, Sting holding the WWE title would only be something you’d see in one of the old SmackDown! vs. RAW video games if you created him. I was in shock that “The Franchise” was back. The rumblings were loud for Sting’s return to TV, but in that instance, it was something that stopped me in my tracks.

Having said that, what really shocked me was the fact that after Raw went off the air, Triple H put Seth Rollins in the main event for Night of Champions on September 20 … against Sting.

So, with the next pay-per-view’s WWE title match set already, I have to ask: Is Sting winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Rollins the right call?

Before I even consider the outlook past the PPV next month, I initially said to myself, “Please God, let Stinger hold the WWE gold just once. Please. Do it for us hopeless WCW fans.” Then I began to process where things would go if Sting won the title.

Let’s face it: Seth Rollins is really good at his job. When he became Mr. Money in the Bank last summer, I said to myself, “That guy’s going to be the WWE Champion before next year’s WrestleMania. He’s that good.” Of course we know how that one went. Rollins cashed in DURING — not after — during the main event of WrestleMania 31 this year, which then led me to then say:

Skip ahead five months, and Seth Rollins has gotten even better. Even before his title theft at WrestleMania, his match with Randy Orton was probably the match of the night. He’s beaten the likes of Orton at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view after ‘Mania and John Cena (with a little help) this past Sunday to become the first person to hold the WWE and United States titles simultaneously.

When he’s been given the chance to perform, there’s been nobody better than Seth Rollins. That is why I’m extremely hesitant on putting the title on Sting.

Don’t get me wrong, Sting deserves a reign as champion. He was the last piece to bringing WWE and WCW together. His loyalty and love for the WCW promotion (also known as Jim Crockett Promotions many moons ago) as a whole, deserves to be recognized.

If there’s anyone in the business (not named Seth Rollins) I would want the title on, it would be Sting.

Here’s why I’m hesitant about the situation: Rollins is the hottest (male) star in the business. He’s the best performer on the roster. (Go back and watch those awful segments with J&J Security and Kane, and tell he’s not.) Why hurt his year-plus-long momentum (that just grew with the win over Cena) for roughly a month-long reign for Sting? If we knew Sting was committed to a busier schedule, it would make a little more sense.

Plus, it’s Sting and it’s awesome, but what sense does Sting coming back now make?

It’s a weird spot for Sting, being that he lost his only WWE match at WrestleMania to Triple H of all people (where they also seemingly buried the hatchet in the WWE-WCW rivalry). But, without any type of minor build at all, he’s all of a sudden in the main event of the next pay-per-view against the top performer in the company.

We can all pretty much assume at this point, that Sting’s ascension to becoming WWE World Heavyweight Champion will culminate at Night of Champions, but it shouldn’t.
