30 Greatest Gimmick Match Types in WWE History
1. TLC Match
Clocking in at number one is perhaps the match the defined an era and an entire division. The tag team division was stacked with teams like Edge & Christian, The Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz, presenting us with classic match after classic match. Then they introduced tables, ladders and chairs to the equation. Left in it’s place is a legacy of matches that are what the era was about: absolutely destroying your opponents in whatever way you could and potentially hurting yourself in the process.
Edge and Christian brought the chair element. The Hardy’s were known for their high-flying, high spot abilities and the Dudley’s always brought the tables to the party. Put all three of those together and you have the greatest gimmick match in WWE history. These six men were risk takers, willing to put themselves in harm’s way in order to create some of the bigger pops the WWE has seen.
This match combined violence with incredible spots and storytelling in a way that WWE hasn’t been able to repeat. It helps that these three tag teams revolutionized these concepts with how good they could perform their craft in the ring, but still the TLC match is the greatest gimmick match we have seen in the WWE.
Which match types did we miss? What other notable matches could have made this list? We would love to hear what you have to say in the comments below.
