5 Superstars Who Could Be the Next WWE United States Champion

Jeff Hardy
Sorry Matt, but you’re gonna have to take a backseat this time. While the WWE tag team division recently saw the return of the Dudleys, Jeff Hardy might be better suited returning as a solo act.
The rumors have run rampant, which I addressed in a previous article, but if Jeff Hardy answered the U.S. Open challenge and eventually beat Cena for the belt, we would have one of the biggest surprises in recent memory. Just picture it. Cena’s in the ring, touting the return of the U.S. Open challenge after taking the belt back from Seth Rollins. He goes on his little rant, ending with “So if you want some! Come! Get Some!” And then you hear this:
We already know Hardy is capable of putting on incredible matches, and he’s probably the only guy on this list besides Daniel Bryan who could reasonably beat Cena cleanly without it hurting his rep. If Jeff Hardy came back and immediately took the gold from Cena, it would re-establish him as a legitimate main-eventer upon his return.
A Jeff Hardy vs John Cena rivalry is not something I thought I’d ever be writing about, but with a Hardy return potentially on the horizon, a series of matches between these two would certainly not disappoint.
