Is Seth Rollins Truly Best for Business in WWE?

Seth Rollins was the center of an extremely memorable moment at WrestleMania 31 in April, but it seems his momentum has slowed down. Along with a combination of injuries to top stars and the low ratings on television, is Rollins likely to remain the WWE World Heavyweight Champion for much longer?

A true main event player in World Wrestling Entertainment has to give you a memory that make that person one of a kind. Seth Rollins had that moment at WrestleMania 31 when he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract in the middle of the main event between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

With all the big names who won their first world title using the now infamous briefcase, no one ever legitimately stole the show at the “grandest stage of them all” in sports entertainment. It was a move that not even Edge – known as the “Ultimate Opportunist” – ever attempted. Fans were shocked, but in a much more positive way than the year before with the end of the Undertaker’s streak.

Fans seemed happy because there was a lot of negativity surrounding the Lesnar-Reigns match since no one like the concept. It was the start of Rollins’ current title reign that is closing in on 200 days and yet there are some who question whether he is truly best for business as the WWE’s top guy.

The biggest reason for the heat from fans is not the nude pictures that surfaced that led to the affair he was having with development talent Zahra Schreiber – although it really doesn’t help the image during a PG era where WWE wants to recruit a younger fan base. But two big name stars have suffered injuries from matches with Rollins.

WARNING: Video below is graphic.

On the July 27 edition of Monday Night Raw during a match with John Cena for the United States Championship, Rollins was delivering his signature flying knee move that is commonly seen in mixed martial arts. But this one unexpectedly connected with Cena’s face and sent his nose to the right side of his face.

Accidents happen and this could have easily been a mistake that fans wouldn’t have been too upset about. Granted, you have to give Cena credit for continuing the match despite the blood continuously flowing and would obviously affect one’s ability to breath during a match.

There’s always a risk for injury in the world of professional wrestling and even though things are planning, there’s only so much you can control without any problems. But that wasn’t the last time we would link Rollins with an injury.

During the Night of Champions pay-per-view on September 20, Rollins was living a childhood dream of being in the ring with “The Icon” Sting in a match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. At one point in the match, Rollins delivered another one of his signature moves in a powerbomb into the turnbuckle.

We’ve seen this move done before on other superstars, but Sting looked shaken up after that and was not even able to run the ropes at full speed. They were able to finish the match, but Sting’s future of wrestling another match – possibly at WrestleMania 32 – is up in the air. Sure, this could be listed as another accident or that the move should not be done at someone who is 56 years old.

There are many reasons to defend Rollins, but with two stars having been injured in matches over the past few months won’t help a superstar’s reputation. If anything, Rollins might be on thin ice and has to tread carefully by not allowing another accident to happen.

Another aspect that isn’t helpings Rollins’ case to be the top guy in the WWE is the ratings for Monday Night Raw being lower than their usual trends when competing with top programs like Monday Night Football, The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. Vince McMahon is known to be someone who will make changes and the injuries to Cena and Sting might become an even bigger factor for Rollins’ future as the champion.

His promos have never been a true strength and he has lost some momentum with the storyline. He comes off more of a complaining champion than someone who can be a true main event player.

So the questions has to be asked again – is Seth Rollins truly best for business? It’s going to have to pick up soon if he wants to keep the championship longer.
