WWE Hell in a Cell 2015: Why New Day Must Defeat the Dudley Boyz

Is it the wrong time to give the Dudleyz their 10th reign as champions?

More from WWE

Ever since that post-SummerSlam edition of Raw, the direction of the tag team division has been clear. The Dudleyz made their triumphant return, and their quest to be 10-time tag team champions began. But thanks to Xavier Woods’ constant interference, their pursuit has been put on hold several times. Now, it seems like they will finally get the big win, with this being their third formal title shot. It certainly seems like the right time for their historic win, right?

Wrong. The New Day need to retain their tag team championships at Hell in a Cell.

The reason so many people think the Dudley Boyz are going to win at Hell in a Cell is because, as I said, it’s their third formal title shot, and it seems like they came back to WWE with their main goal being to become 10-time champs. And while I agree it would be awkward for them to lose clean, and it would be tedious for Woods to end yet another match in a DQ, one of those two things absolutely has to happen, for the sake of New Day’s credibility.

  • The New Day previously lost their titles to the Prime Time Players when it seemed like they shouldn’t have, so the last thing they need is to drop their belts yet again and halt their momentum. Lately, they’ve been as hot as ever, and have added a new dimension to their characters by acting more serious and aggressive at times. It’s that kinda thing that keeps characters from getting stale, so this new element to their gimmick is great. And that simply furthers the fact that they shouldn’t lose their titles. Because what message would that send? “Yeah, we’re taking things a lot more seriously, so watch out, we’re coming for you! Oh crap, we just lost our titles. Guess that didn’t work.”

Aside from halting their momentum, it would be a wasted opportunity to give the Dudleyz the titles at Hell in a Cell. A lot of fans had predicted this match would be a tables match, and the fact that it isn’t says a lot. First, it says Xavier Woods will probably interfere at Hell in a Cell, since it is just a normal match and a DQ, as usual, would prevent the titles from changing hands. Second, it says that this interference will likely set up an eventual tables match. The Authority will book it because Woods constantly gets involved, and this will make it so his antics won’t affect the match result so drastically.

Taking the titles from the New Day right now would simply be a huge mistake. They are still the hottest tag team in the company, with their unique combination of pop-culture humor and in-ring talent. While the tag team division has a lot of title-worthy contenders, the New Day needs to hold onto the belts, at least until there is a good reason to lose them.
