Why Seth Rollins’ Injury Could Help WWE’s Ratings

Could Seth Rollins’ injury end up helping WWE?

Let me start by saying I wish nothing but the best for Seth Rollins. He is arguably the best performer WWE has right now, and although his title reign became a bit stale over the last few months, he’s still an irreplaceable commodity. This is a horrible situation and I think I speak for all wrestling fans when I wish him a speedy recovery. With that said, his injury could spice up WWE to the point where their ratings, which have hit record lows, could finally climb back up.

Although Rollins is undeniably talented in the ring and on the mic, many fans have become bored with him as the centerpiece of the company night in and night out. It wasn’t because of Rollins, rather it was the booking, which needs to be outstanding to keep fans interested when the same guy is champion for months at a time. Instead, all of Rollins’ PPV title matches have either ended in shenanigans, or have been clean wins over guys who never had a chance in the first place (Sting, Kane). WWE has been reluctant to take the title off of their new golden boy, but now they will be forced to make a major change in plans.

Not only do they need to crown a new champion, they need to establish a new challenger. We’ll never know whether Roman Reigns was supposed to beat Rollins at Survivor Series, but either way, it was a feud that would have likely lasted for a few months. While that could have been entertaining, having Rollins out of the picture for a while will change things in WWE so drastically, that fans may be more inclined to tune in simply to find out what exactly WWE is going to do about all this. Are they going to pin the title on Reigns since they might have been going that route anyway? Do they give it back to Brock Lesnar? Does Sheamus finally cash in his Money in the Bank and become the champion? What about Kevin Owens? Dean Ambrose? There are so many directions creative could take this.

Some may argue that the ratings will suffer since one of the best performers in the company is gone. Well, as fun as Rollins is to watch, and while he may be the best in-ring worker WWE has, his absence means big changes. WWE has been babying Rollins for months. He was the new face of the company, and deservedly so. But it started to feel like he was never going to lose his championship, and that WWE could have pushed him toward a Nikki Bella-esque title reign to further erase CM Punk from the history books (Punk held the title for 434 days, the longest reign of the last 27 years).

In short, big changes are on the way, and in the WWE, big changes can be a lot of fun if executed properly. Hopefully they take advantage of this unfortunate situation and turn it into a positive.
