How Seth Rollins May Have Hinted at a Face Turn on WWE Raw

Did Seth Rollins hint at a possible face turn during his Slammy acceptance speech?

The Slammy Awards have come and gone, and the show was let’s just say, less than riveting. Award upon award was given out, and time after time the winner did not show up. Kudos to WWE for conducting a legitimate fan vote for these awards, but the downside to that is a lot of nominees were people who couldn’t feasibly show up to the show, and a lot of them ended up winning.

But there were a few bright spots in the night, namely the surprise return of Seth Rollins who showed up to accept his “Superstar of the Year” award. First of all, good job WWE Universe for voting Rollins as the winner. A lot of the voters are young kids who only go for the babyfaces (i.e. Neville beating Kevin Owens for Breakout Superstar of the Year), so it was nice to see the most deserving superstar win this award despite being a heel.

Secondly, thank you, Rollins, for showing up. On a night where Sting, The Rock, John Cena, and Brock Lesnar all failed to show up to accept their awards (which I understand, but it still makes for a boring show), Rollins showed up, crutches and all, to accept his. It really just put a bow on the theme of 2015, which was Rollins continually anchoring the WWE brand almost by himself.

While his appearance was one of the most exciting moments of the night, his acceptance speech in itself was perhaps the most impactful, because the former ROH star may have hinted at a potential face turn when he comes back from injury.

Since Rollins got hurt, fans have speculated whether he could return as a good guy and not the cowardly heel he portrayed so well this past year. He’s got the talent and mic skills to make it as one of the most over faces in the company, and since he’s going to be cheered upon his return no matter what, it seems like a good opportunity to turn him. So did Rollins lay the groundwork for this potential turn? It sure seemed like it.

The biggest thing that stood out to me during his acceptance was that he never said anything overtly heelish throughout his entire speech. Sure he was a little cocky saying there was no other real option for Superstar of the Year, but that’s to be expected. They’re not going to turn him fully face right now considering he’s so far away from actually returning, so they have to maintain his current character for now, or, at least, a toned-down version of it.

What’s really noteworthy is he never insulted Roman Reigns or anyone else on the roster, didn’t whine about losing his title, and didn’t make any pro-Authority comments. Seems a little strange doesn’t it?

So, what did he do? Well, let’s see. He thanked the fans (well, kind of), talked about his accomplishments, mentioned his injury, and then closed it out with something that others may take as a generic “I’ll be back” statement, but what it seemed to be is a hint at a face turn.

"“In 2016, I will redesign Seth Rollins, I will rebuild myself, and I will come back and reclaim the title that I never lost.”"

So let’s put everything together. He didn’t say anything heelish, but he tried to maintain some heel characteristics (bragging about his accomplishments). This way, he doesn’t deviate from his current character, but he also doesn’t sound like the arrogant jerk he usually is. Then he ended the speech by saying he’s going to redesign and rebuild himself. Maybe it’s looking too far into it, but it seems like Rollins intentionally left the door open for a face turn when he comes back, if not directly hinting at one.
