How John Cena Could Have Won the Intercontinental Championship in 2016
By Todd Boyer
In his career, John Cena has won many championships, but the one that has alluded him is the Intercontinental Championship.
One of the main questions coming into 2016 is that if and when is he going to win his record-tying 16th WWE World Heavyweight Championship, tying Ric Flair for the most World Heavyweight Championship reigns all-time.
Despite being around for 13 years, there is one championship that Cena has never won in his WWE career, and that is winning the Intercontinental Championship. It’s something he could have done before suffering an injury.

But it does not seem that Cena will be contending for the Intercontinental title anytime soon, as the rumors spreading around the internet are that Cena is going to challenge the current WWE World Heavyweight champion Roman Reigns for a shot at the title.

The question is how to we get to Cena having a shot at the Intercontinental Championship? The answer is quiet simple actually; turn both Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose heel in a rivalry versus “the face that runs the place.”
But why would you turn both Reigns and Ambrose to face off against Cena? Well, first off, in the point in his career, a John Cena heel turn is a highly unlikely option, being that, whether you like him or hate him, Cena sells the most merchandise out of any WWE superstar. Secondly, a heel turn would boost Ambrose from the number five or six face on the roster to the number one or two heel on the roster. Finally, Reigns would benefit the most from a heel turn; not only would turning heel show his strengths of brute force, but it would hide his weakness in his acting skills.

The next step in the rivalry would be to have Reigns and Ambrose hold their respective titles past WrestleMania 32. While Cena is on the poster for the 2016 Royal Rumble, one could be thinking that Cena is going to win the Royal Rumble match and face Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania.
In the build up to WrestleMania, have the Brothers in Arms, Reigns and Ambrose, turn heel against Cena.
The only way that you can start a feud between Ambrose and Cena is by not having Ambrose ringside during the main event of WrestleMania 32, but yet have Ambrose ambush Cena, causing Cena to win via disqualification and have Reigns retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
From there you would have your feud of John Cena versus the Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose heading into Extreme Rules, and being that it is an Extreme Rules match the match would be no disqualification.

The unfortunate fact is that, even though Reigns and Ambrose would be heels during the feud, the feud would be against the most polarizing superstar in the WWE, Cena, who gets booed and cheered in every arena he enters.
The main question is would Cena have been able to elevate the Intercontinental Championship like he did the United States Championship in 2015? Would the Intercontinental Championship be better to stay on Ambrose? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
