Bray Wyatt: Does It Matter Anymore?
By Dean Siemon
The injury to Bray Wyatt is just another sad chapter during his run in WWE, which is why it’s hard to be excited about anything he does moving forward.
There was once upon a time when many wrestling fans were excited about what Bray Wyatt would do when he had shown so much potential working in WWE’s developmental territories of Florida Championship Wrestling and at NXT. It looked like there was some big plans when he had a successful feud with Kane and then with a number of superstars before he ran into a few brick walls by the names of John Cena, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns and a few smaller ones that should have been more like hurdles – i.e. Ryback.
If Wyatt’s injury would have happened two years ago, there would have been a real reason to be concerned for another top-tier talent having to take time off from television. But with how Wyatt has been booked for the past year, there really isn’t any reason to be too sad. In fact, it’s hard to imagine if there would ever be a time where Wyatt can become more than a crazy talking person.

The things the Wyatt Family has done in recent months have felt random. What was the point of him coming out to target the Rock and then once again be buried by John Cena at WrestleMania? On the very next night, his group then attacks the League of Nations without any explanation for the supposed face turn.
Does it matter what the creative team does with Wyatt and his family? Considering how there are a lack of wins for someone that continues to state on the microphone that he will be the face of fear, words are empty unless there are actions that can support them. It’s hard to take the future of the Bray Wyatt character as a serious villain or even as a hero character – at least while there is still the creepy video that is played before they come in and out of the ring.

It has been said in the past that the WWE has messed up how they’ve handled his character; a superstar who is the epitome of missed opportunities. It’s not all of his fault as it has more to do with the booking and the storylines he has been placed into.
This column is not to say that Bray Wyatt will never be successful, but there are going to have to be some changes to the character during his time away from television to recover from right leg injury. Maybe he can work on a change in the persona where he slides more into the insane gimmick or more towards someone who has suddenly discovered a new source of power that allows him to be more like the “god” that he’s proclaimed to be in the past.

The injury could mean a chance for Wyatt to be reinvented and maybe have a debut of the Sister Abigail character; someone who is later explained to have helped him in his recovery. But for the time being, it’s hard to really be depressed about the Wyatt character being injured.
