WWE Should Have Championship for Worst of the Worst
By Dean Siemon
While the WWE has multiple championships, maybe one for the lower-tier on the card is a unique opportunity.
Sometimes, it’s good to do something different when it comes to a new championship in the world of professional wrestling. There have been title belts like the King of the Deathmatch, King of the Cruiserweights and multiple belts that represent a variety of divisions and weight classes.
For World Wrestling Entertainment, it might be a good time to have some fun with the idea of having another championship. While earlier this week, I wrote about the irrelevance that recent booking has put on the Intercontinental and United States championships. But imagine the WWE having a title belt that goes to the bottom of the talent card – a worst of the worst championship.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Hardcore Championship was a title that kept lower-tier superstars somewhat relevant with the stipulation that the title could be won 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It took away the risk of superstars being forgotten about on the roster; which is a problem with talents who the WWE doesn’t really have anything else for on the roster.

The concept of the proposed championship would be that the person who loses in the “championship match” – via pinfall or submission – would be given the belt as a symbol of the worst on the card. While demeaning in nature, it could bring an extra level of depth for a storyline for certain superstars. Imagine the members of the Social Outcasts fighting each other for not wanting to be “that guy.”
How would the inaugural champion be crowned? There could be a tournament where winning “eliminates” you from moving on towards the championship. No one will want to be considered the worst talent on the roster, so it might make matches involving guys that fans may have forgotten about have a more interesting angle.

At the moment, I cannot recall another promotion having a similar “championship” concept. However, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this is something that has been done somewhere on the independent circuit. It does scream “indie” idea, at least a little bit. Keep in mind, however, that the WWE seems to be transitioning to include the “indie” audience.
While there might be some people saying that the WWE has enough championship belts on the main roster, it’s felt that way only because the belts don’t really carry as much weight to their name as they used to – they were once on par with being world champion and have been reduced to belts that just exist.

If the WWE is going to have championships other than the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Women’s Championship and Tag Team Championships, there should be something behind them that makes them memorable. Having a title belt for the lower-card to try and pass off like a hot potato will provide a little bit of comedy and something different for the WWE fans watching at home. In the end, isn’t that what fans really want – something different than what we’re used to seeing for almost a decade?
