John Cena’s WWE Return Has Possible Ready-Made Feud
The seeds for John Cena’s possible first feud coming back from injury could have been set.
On Monday, May 30, John Cena will be making his anticipated WWE return. He has been out since injuring his shoulder in the days following his comeback from missing two months due to filming a reality show. While Cena did appear at WrestleMania 32 in a segment with The Rock, this was a one-off.
When Mr. HLR returns in about three weeks, it will hopefully be a run that lasts. WWE will likely put him into a feud with someone on his first night and set up something for Money in the Bank. It’s possible that he’s placed in the MITB ladder match, but with the rest of the card being filled out, maybe WWE has him feud with someone.

On the recent episode of Monday Night Raw, Rusev became the new No. 1 Contender to the WWE United States Championship. He will face Kalisto, likely at WWE Extreme Rules, for the belt.

Given that the Lucha Dragon’s title run has been mediocre, it seems possible that the Bulgarian Brute wins. The U.S. title has been pushed down the card and hasn’t been interesting in Kalisto’s reign, so a change could be needed.
If Rusev wins, he will have earned his second run with the U.S. title. He won it in 2014 off Sheamus and was defeated at WrestleMania 31 by John Cena. The leader of the Cenation then went on to make the belt more important than it has been in years with the US Open Challenge. This produced some of WWE’s best matches of the year.
With the WWE World Heavyweight Championship picture filled, Cena will need something else to do. So, if Rusev wins, how about rekindling this feud?

On the night of his return, Cena will probably cut a promo to tell the fans how he’s back, tell them about his recovery, etc. While he’s going on, Rusev could interrupt and walk down to the ring. He would insult the former Dr. of Thuganomics, go back and forth, and lead to Cena challenging the champion for his belt. The argument would be for Rusev to “put his money where his mouth is” after talking trash, and after goading him into this, we could get a match made.
WWE may not pull off the title change on Raw since Cena’s return would be enough of a draw, so a match could end in a disqualification. Factor in Rusev’s brief reign too, which could make this a title bout at Money in the Bank.
Cena defeating Rusev wouldn’t be a surprise. WWE will surely want to get him a big win just weeks into his return, and a title victory would do it. Bringing back the US Open Challenge wouldn’t be a bad incentive for this to happen either with the Raw ratings teetering.

The opportunity is potentially there for John Cena to feud with Rusev upon return. It’s not a fresh matchup, but with many other Superstars in the middle of major feuds, this could be a fit.
