Is Bullet Club in Danger of Becoming Too Much Like the nWo?
By Carl Gac
We take a look at some of the problems that could befall the ever expanding Bullet Club faction.
It’s not too far-fetched to say that The Bullet Club is one of the hottest properties in the world of wrestling right now. With the recent loss of AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows, many people thought that may be the end of the group as a viable faction. New Japan Pro Wrestling countered that by having Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks form “The Elite”.
The main Bullet Club group consisted of Omega as the leader, The Young Bucks, Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Cody Hall and Yujiro Takahashi. That was until this past weekend when a big-name American star was added to the fold, and then an upcoming member of the Ring of Honor roster was thrown into the mix at the latest set of ROH TV tapings. Adam Cole and Adam Page are now Bullet Club members, but are the group threatening to echo a past mistake made by a similar black and white clad super group?

Back in the late 1990’s, WCW had probably the hottest faction in the history of professional wrestling in their midst. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall had left the WWF and apparently invaded WCW. They added the long time baby face Hulk Hogan to their ranks a few weeks after their debuts, and the nWo was born.

The nWo was a group of men who had no time for the rules. They did what they wanted when they wanted and seemingly nobody could stop them. Slowly new members of the group were added, the early additions made perfect sense. Ted DiBiase came in as the mega money benefactor. Syxx (X-Pac) came in as the worker who could carry their matches. The Giant (Big Show) was the monster who was unstoppable. Eric Bischoff was the man who ran WCW and his inclusion changed the game.
Then it all started to get silly. Slowly they began to add more and more men. Buff Bagwell, Konan, Scott Norton, Brian Adams etc, etc etc. The list could go on forever and you’d still be able to think of more names that were added as time went on. At times it was ridiculous, and i’m sure there were probably more members of the nWo than men who fought for WCW on more than one occasion.

A surefire way to ruin something in wrestling is to make it become so diluted that the fans see it as more of a joke than a serious proposition. Let’s not even get started on the warring nWo factions, including nWo Hollywood, nWo Wolfpac and nWo Black and White. Despite the efforts of everyone that battled the nWo, the thing that killed the nWo in the end could very well have been the nWo itself.
When the Young Bucks, Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa were booked for the ROH card at Global Wars, one of the annual supercards that sees ROH and NJPW combine their forces, nobody thought that the night would end with the utter devastation that it did. During the main event, between ROH Champion Jay Lethal and challenger Colt Cabana, the BUllet Club came out and offered both men a Bullet Club shirt. Then the light went out and, in true pro wrestling fashion, that signalled the arrival of someone else. That man was Adam Cole, who received a ridiculous pop from the ROH crowd.
The Bullet Club proceeded to destroy everything in their wake, including super kicks on the referee and both members of the announce team in Kevin Kelly and Mr Wrestling 3 (Steve Corino). They took out a large number of security personnel, even spray painting the BC initials on them and the ringside barriers. In true nWo fashion, they jumped into the announce booth and took over commentary. The final scene of the night was the Bullet Club ruling the roost of ROH. That can only lead to a massive feud between Bullet Club and ROH going forward.
On Monday nights ROH tv tapings, Adam Page was meant to be part of the main event between Bullet Club and a group of ROH wrestlers. Page was meant to be in team ROH but was apparently attacked by Bullet Club. Page then came out, but instead of helping his ROH brothers, he turned on them and became the newest member of the Bullet Club.
The addition of Cole was a potential master stroke for Bullet Club. He is one of the finest wrestlers in ROH, possibly the world and can offer them instant star power. Page on the other hand is a man who is well known in his own stomping ground, but probably not so much in the rest of the world. Could this be a case of Bullet Club adding guys just to bulk out their roster, or is it a genius way of getting Page over to New Japan. As the supposed Bullet Club young boy, is he just another addition in the vain of Buff Bagwell to the nWo, you have to hope that’s not the case.

Right now both ROH and NJPW have the unique opportunity to have Bullet Club run roughshod across their shows in the way they did to end Global Wars. The best way to grow them heat is to have them do something similar on NJPW shows in the very near future. What they don’t need to do right now is to have any more men, or women for that matter, add to the ranks of the Bullet Club. That would be a surefire way to weaken what is a group of the most outstanding talents in the world.
The Bullet Club has the perfect opportunity to be everything that the nWo ultimately ruined. They can be the ultra cocky heels, who do what they want, when they want, for as long as they want to be. Bullet Club needs to cut out the one thing that killed the mystique of the nWo and that is to only have men in their ranks who are useful to the group and not just hangers-on
