WWE Should Use Traditional Jobbers More Often

WWE should use traditional jobbers instead of main roster mainstays.

This past Monday on Raw, the Shining Stars made their debut after weeks of vignettes. The former Matadores came out to a less than stellar reaction and began their run as cocky Puerto Rican nationalists on a mediocre note. But aside from the re-debuting Primo and Epico, there was something else notable about their match, that being their opponents.

NXT fans will recognize their opponents as Corey Hollis and John Skyler, a team of two decent workers who routinely job to teams like The Revival and American Alpha. This is different than how WWE typically does things as their televised matches usually feature guys like Tyler Breeze  taking the losses from whoever they want to give a cheap win to. Now this makes sense because obviously there are different kayfabe tiers in WWE and it’s OK to show that through the match results, but it becomes a problem when the same guy just eats loss after loss.

Let’s look at Tyler Breeze for example. After coming up to the main roster, a guy who was one of the best heels in NXT was relegated to a jobber. Obviously, WWE needs jobbers, but do they really have to be guys who are consistently on TV? Do we really need to devalue someone like Tyler Breeze to the point where their character may not ever feasibly be able to recover? No, we don’t.

That’s why the match between the Shining Stars and the newly billed Brian Kennedy and Scott Jackson (even though their trunks still said Skyler and Hollis) was so well done. The team of two guys who are making their re-debut is obviously going to win, so why force someone relevant to take the loss? That’s why it made so much sense for these guys to be the ones to lose. They won’t be on the main roster any time soon, so this won’t hurt their credibility in any way.

Now I’m not saying no one on who is consistently on the main roster should ever lose; that would be ridiculous. What I am saying is that defeating someone like Tyler Breeze or Fandango should be more of an accomplishment than it currently is. If someone like Cesaro beats Breeze, it shouldn’t just be “Oh he beat that guy who doesn’t have a win in like 3 months.” The mindset should be that he beat a lower level competitor, but at least it was someone who is actually on the roster. And ideally, the match would go a little longer than 2 minutes.

Save the squash matches for the nameless guys like Hollis and Skyler and give some kind of credibility to Tyler Breeze, even though he will lose more often than not. That way, guys don’t take unnecessary losses and they will have some kind of reputation they could possibly build upon in the future.
