1. The Lincoln Imperative

It’s easy to cheer for a wrestler when things are going well. Even John Cena was once an overwhelming fan favorite until standard smark evolution took over and he became your son’s favorite superstar. Thankfully, my son isn’t old enough to even know what wrestling is except for vague human shapes on television who are taking the place of Mickey Mouse Club twice a week.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” This quote, often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln, sums up the Roman Reigns Championship Experiment. While many fans disagree with how hard the WWE pushed him to be champion over the last few years, these title runs may prove to be what makes him sustainable. In an age where lukewarm WWE stars come and go so often, it is refreshing to watch someone grow and mature as a performer, even when surrounded by a chorus of rejection. Reigns has proven that he is willing to learn and put himself out there for both our jeers and our cheers.

Reigns won’t hold the belt forever, but with Triple H as his mentor and boardroom cheerleader, it’s entirely possible that his title runs go into double-digits before he hangs up his boots. It’s also more than likely fans will eventually come around to him because that’s what fans do. The WWE is masterful at making you eventually care about someone you once hated, which is more than a small part of it’s appeal as a storytelling medium.

Unlike his current and awful catchphrase, Roman Reigns is here to stay. The WWE is counting on wearing down the fan base and have adopted the same “get over it” mentality they employed when CM Punk left the company. You can kick, you can scream, and you can cry but the decision has been made and the show will go on with or without you. Threatening to stop watching WWE because you don’t get your way is the equivalent of threatening to leave Facebook. The numbers prove you aren’t going anywhere so Vince calls your bluff each and every time.
