WWE SummerSlam 2016: Brock Lesnar Should Face Kevin Owens Over Randy Orton

While the rumors going around the internet is Brock Lesnar is likely to face Randy Orton at WWE SummerSlam, Kevin Owens is arguably a better option.

While it’s unclear what the WWE is planning for Brock Lesnar in his first wrestling match after fighting Mark Hunt at UFC 200, but there has been a lot of speculation regarding Lesnar having a match with fellow WWE veteran Randy Orton. It’s understandable to have the top two WWE superstars feud on what WWE considers one of their biggest events of the year.

However, there might be a number of other younger WWE superstars who could warrant having that big match opportunity. One of them is Kevin Owens, who has become one of the most impactful call-ups from NXT in recent memory. Having someone who has considered himself a prizefighter would be the perfect type of opponent for Lesnar – a prizefighter in his own right.

While Kevin Owens is not as big of a name as Randy Orton, he’s made an impact within his first year of the company and the buildup can focus around how Owens has earned himself some upset victories already over John Cena. Owens has a similar style to Brock Lesnar in terms of utilizing strikes and power, while Owens has a few more tricks in the bag to make the match more interesting.

While Lesnar currently works under a limited schedule, Owens has the microphone skills to be able to carry the feud on television in the weeks leading up to SummerSlam. In fact, one might consider the potential war of words between Owens and Paul Heyman to be a fantasy booker’s dream come true. Let those two have their discussions and listen to the promo gold to come as a result.

Obviously the expected result would be that Lesnar would earn a hard-fought victory over a very game Owens, but the WWE could always consider the match to be an opportunity to elevate Owens from the mid-card to main event status – depending on what the WWE’s long-term plan for him would be. Either way, the match would be sure to entertain fans with a five-star quality performance.

Additionally, Orton and Lesnar would be predictable at this point. One of the things the WWE has failed to do is surprise fans with something unexpected and while they have recently made some interesting booking decisions – i.e. Dean Ambrose as WWE World Heavyweight Champion – there are still some moments that don’t come off as a surprise.

Orton may still be able to put together some decent matches, but it’s important to remember that he’s coming off a shoulder injury suffered several months ago. While he may have received the full clearance to compete at 100 percent, it might be wiser to ease Orton back into action instead of making Lesnar one of his first feuds back on television. A better fit for Orton could be someone like Seth Rollins or even Roman Reigns, who may or may not be in the championship picture after the upcoming Battleground triple threat match.
