WWE Draft 2016: Daniel Bryan is Perfect Choice for SmackDown GM
By Carl Gac
Just when we all thought the WWE Draft was going to be a simple affair, it seems WWE has made it a little more interesting, possibly with the help of Daniel Bryan.
When WWE announced the fact that they were set to bring back the brand split, and subsequent Draft, it was widely expected that both Shane and Stephanie McMahon would be put in charge of one show each. This past week on Raw we found out that this would definitely be the case, with a slight added caveat.
Vince McMahon came out to tell us that Shane would become the man to oversee SmackDown, whilst Stephanie will be the top dog on Raw, the McMahon siblings will have the title of Commissioner of their respective show. They will be the ones who make the big decisions, but they both need to appoint a “General Manager” to run the show on a day to day basis. There were many hints dropped to who Stephanie may choose (here’s looking at you Mr. Triple H), and there was the small dropped hint that Daniel Bryan may end up as the GM of SmackDown.

Now as a massive fan of Daniel Bryan, if that was to become the case, I would be the first one to be yelling “YES YES YES” at my TV.

When Daniel Bryan had to retire from active competition in February this year, fans around the world were left in shock. Bryan had been a massive part of the movement from the muscle bound freaks of WWE, to the more agile and smaller wrestlers with the high work rate and indy style. In short Daniel Bryan had proved that you didn’t have to be the stereotypical bodybuilder type to make it in WWE.
Bryan had the backing of such a large proportion of the WWE Universe, partly due to the fact he had cut his teeth on the indy circuit and built up a name for himself, and partly because he was a guy it was easy to get behind and support. He was put in the position at the top of the card because of the support of the fans, not because he was a chosen one of Vince McMahon.
Now with Shane McMahon promising that his version of WWE will be fresh and exciting, Daniel Bryan is the perfect man to add to the all new SmackDown. With Stephanie (and probably Triple H) in charge of Raw, there’s a massive need to have a large babyface presence on SmackDown, the duo of Shane and Bryan are a match made in heaven.
We’ve seen Daniel Bryan, alongside Mauro Ranallo, as part of the presentation team for the Cruiserweight Classic. Bryan comes across as a man who knows a hell of a lot about wrestling, as if we didn’t already know that was the case. If you want a man to help Shane make SmackDown something totally different to the same old format of Raw, then Bryan is a man who can do exactly that.

Since Shane McMahon returned to WWE, in the run up to WrestleMania, he has been the person who has done the most to please the fans. From bringing in the likes of Enzo Amore and Big Cass to the main roster, to making matches and decisions that actually make sense, Shane has been a welcome aspect of Raw and SmackDown in the last few months. If he really wants to carry that on, then Daniel Bryan should be the man who he chooses as his General Manager.
It will be a move that instantly gets the fans behind the new look SmackDown. It will give people a reason to tune in every Tuesday night. It will give Shane some brownie points in the eyes of the fans and give him the opportunity to sit back and make the important decisions, knowing that Bryan is more than capable of making matches and overseeing the smooth running of the show.

Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan as the team behind SmackDown will make it feel like it begins this new dawn on an even footing with Raw, not as the distant number two show that many feel it is now. If WWE wants to give SmackDown a shot at being the equal of the Stephanie McMahon run Raw, then they need to unite Bryan and Shane as the brains behind SmackDown.
