WWE Needs to Suspend Brock Lesnar
By Dean Siemon
The news of a possible failed drug test by Brock Lesnar needs to be met with similar discipline that is being given to other WWE superstars. The discipline should include being removed from this year’s SummerSlam match with Randy Orton.
It might not have been a surprise to read something about how wrestlers would have likely failed multiple drug tests if today’s standards of the WWE’s Talent Wellness Program was in effect. But the 1980s, 1990s and even the early 2000s were a much different time when many of the top talents were men who were larger than life and could pick up many of the industry’s giants to showcase impressive feats of strength.

Back then, a wrestler might have been able to get away with a failed drug test. The company was focused more on trying to keep their top stars on television and making big gains in merchandise sales. But today’s world of professional wrestling is a much different time period where wrestlers – regardless of where they stand in the pecking order – are held accountable for their actions.

The recent news of Brock Lesnar’s potential failed drug test through the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency from late June that could put an asterisk on his recent unanimous decision win over Mark Hunt at UFC 200. In fact, it looks like he failed multiple tests for an illegal substance. This should lead to a suspension not only from mixed martial arts, but also from WWE action that includes being removed from the SummerSlam match with Randy Orton.
Lesnar should have been wiser with his decisions, although we’re not sure what exact substance he tested positive for. But regardless of what the future announcements from USADA reveal, all athletes in any sport or promotion need to be aware of what they are putting into their body and be responsible for knowing the rules of what they can and cannot put into their system.

The WWE had a similar situation involving Roman Reigns last month when he had a failed drug test before his WWE World Heavyweight Championship match against Seth Rollins at Money in the Bank. Reigns was allowed to drop his title and appear on the following Raw to help set up the upcoming triple threat championship match between himself, Rollins and Dean Ambrose.
While his suspension ends before the triple threat match, some may recommend that he does not compete in the championship match. With that in mind, a similar punishment for Lesnar should be considered by removing him from SummerSlam. While the WWE obviously wants to put the biggest names possible on the card, removing Lesnar would make a statement that the WWE is truly not going to tolerate any type of illegal substance use.

There is a good chance that the WWE is going to wait for the official USADA reports that will reveal what Lesnar tested positive for. But the company has to make a decision sometime soon because one has to believe there will be negative publicity directed towards the WWE if they either don’t suspend the Beast Incarnate soon.
