WWE SmackDown Live: Tournament Should Decide Tag Titles

With it being rumored that SmackDown Live will too have their own tag titles, a tournament would be the best way for them to be introduced.

What better way to introduce a new WWE title than for it to be decided by way of a single elimination tournament? Fans love to see individuals and teams all vying for a prize; in this case, new WWE tag championships for SmackDown Live. WWE has plenty of tag teams that can participate and fill out a bracket. It has been rumored that WWE will add tag team championships to SmackDown, and this is the perfect method to crown the new champions.

It would not be the first time new tag team championships would be decided in a tournament style environment on SmackDown. In 2002, as SmackDown was still relatively new, much like it is now, post- brand split, they then held a tournament which would decide new tag team champions. The tournament featured teams such as Rey Mysterio and Edge, Los Guerreros, Brock Lesnar and Tajiari, John Cena and Billy Kidman and the eventual winners, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit.

Oddly enough, the Tournament finals, which pitted Edge and Mysterio versus Angle and Benoit against each other, was held at a pay-per-view called none other than, “No Mercy.” No Mercy, in the New Era, will now be an exclusive SmackDown Live pay-per-view. The event will be held on October 9th in Sacramento, California this year. Coincidence? I think not. Perhaps, WWE could do it yet again, and in a similar fashion.

This year, the newly formed SmackDown Live roster features teams such as The Hype Bros, The Vaudevillains, The Ascension, The Uso’s, Breezango, and fan favorite, American Alpha. SmackDown has six legitimate tag teams on their roster. They are just two teams away from being able to have an eight-team tournament. Four of the six current tag teams on SmackDown have worn WWE tag team gold before.

If WWE is to go this route, the remaining two tag teams needed can either be formed from superstars already up on the main roster, or perhaps newly drafted tag teams from NXT. Fans can get behind John Cena pairing up with almost anyone on the show. It would be one more shot for Cena to go for tag team gold. There are multiple tag teams WWE can call up from their developmental show, NXT as well. Teams like The Revival, TM61, The Authors of Pain, as well as Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa.

September is when the next call ups from NXT will make their way to the main roster. Both The Revival and Gargano and Ciampa are tag teams that are more than ready to make their way towards the big time. They are all established names in NXT. However, only one would be eligible to come up in that time. The NXT tag team championships will  be contested between the two teams at NXT Takeover Brooklyn, the day before SummerSlam.

Holding a tournament to crown the champions of the SmackDown Live tag team division can have multiple benefits to it. New Rivalries can be created by having a tournament. The losing teams may seek retaliation eventually, on the pairing that costed them their chance at gold. It would also be a way to showcase the entire tag team division in one shot. It will show what all teams are about and represent, as well as allow for the WWE universe to see their respective talents inside the ring.

Hosting a tournament can create tension within tag teams themselves which will allow for more singles competition on the show. Power rankings would certainly be formed within the tag team division. Single elimination style is the way to go and will get the fans on their feet as an elite tag team division will surely be showcased.
