Kevin Owens Should Win the WWE Raw Universal Championship Match

This coming Monday on Raw there will be a Fatal 4-Way match to determine the next Universal Champion with Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Big Cass and Roman Reigns in the match. The winner of the match should be Kevin Owens. Here’s why.

In order to establish a new championship as a big deal, it’s a good idea to put the title on somebody that has never won a major championship before. It’s the same reason why Finn Balor was the smart choice at SummerSlam.

In Kevin Owens, they have somebody that hasn’t been a WWE World (or Universal) Champion before, but he has enough credibility as a worker that you know he’s going to put on a great match every time he holds the title. Plus, as a performer, he’s one of the most obnoxious heels that there is and he’s able to make people laugh once in a while too.

Let’s look at the other guys in the match and why they shouldn’t win.

Big Cass – Yes, he’s seven-foot-tall and you can’t teach that, but in terms of being ready, he has a long way to go. In a year or two if they really built him up then maybe he can be a main event talent thought of as a major champion. At this point, he shouldn’t be there. Putting him in the match in the first place is a bit of a stretch (it should be Sami Zayn), yet it does no harm to have him there either.

Roman Reigns – Is he still feuding with Rusev? It seems that way even though their rivalry wasn’t continued on Raw at all. It feels like Rusev is going to show up to cost Reigns the win this match as a way to keep that story going into the Clash of Champions event. Plus, putting a major title on Reigns so soon after he was suspended for a month due to a Wellness Policy Violation sends the wrong message to the locker room. He may be a Vince McMahon favorite, but he is not the right choice.

Seth Rollins – He is the easiest choice because he was the guy that faced off with Balor at SummerSlam. Easy is boring, though. Rollins doesn’t come across as a true heel since he rarely cheats in matches. His promos are mean, but they are not that mean. Owens is more of a pure heel than he is. People want to cheer Rollins because he’s an athletic guy that does cool looking moves all the time. It may be time for WWE to consider turning him face since there’s a bit of a void there.

It’s possible that Rollins will win and if he did, most fans would understand why since he’s an established main eventer. However, it’s important to build for the future and look in another direction. That’s why Owens makes sense.

Owens would be the best choice, the freshest choice, and the smart choice.

You may be thinking that Owens hasn’t been built up strong enough to be the WWE Universal Champion. It’s not like WWE cares about his loss to Sami Zayn at Battleground because they have done nothing with Zayn since then, which is a mistake.

There’s also a perception that WWE may not be high on Owens, but there was a news story this week stating that the plan was for Owens to headline the September 25 Clash of Champions event against Finn Balor. They also planned on doing Balor vs. Owens vs. Chris Jericho at the October Hell in a Cell event as well.

Where WWE will have concerns is when it comes to finding opponents for whoever the new champion is. There’s just not that much depth on the Raw roster now that Balor is hurt.

Owens could feud with Reigns for a couple of months or have a rivalry with his current ally Chris Jericho if they need to. If Rollins went face, he could work with Owens too. There’s also Sami Zayn, who beat Owens in their last match and we know they always have outstanding matches together.

Long term, WWE may want to do Rollins vs. Balor at WrestleMania 33 assuming Balor is back in action by then, which he should be. If that’s the case, they shouldn’t put the title on Rollins yet. Let Owens hold it for a few months at least, elevate him and let him grow as a performer because they need to establish more people as top guys. Then Rollins can win it later in the year or earlier next year leading into WrestleMania if they want Balor to get his revenge on Rollins.

Owens has put in the work to deserve a run with the WWE Universal Championship. This coming Monday should be his time and if it isn’t, it would be an opportunity lost for WWE.
