Bray Wyatt Remains Underused on WWE SmackDown After Backlash

The new face of fear is still struggling to find his spot on the main event. Backlash slowed Bray Wyatt’s momentum even further.

Bray Wyatt hits all the right notes from creative’s point of view. He possesses an entertaining gimmick, is an immensely popular character, brags great charisma and mic skills. Yet, week after week, Wyatt’s momentum declines. Creative builds him as the unstoppable monster for weeks, only to fall at the last hurdle. Backlash did not prove to be different either. One has to wonder if any other wrestler could recover from as much losses as Wyatt and still remain relevant.

The Eater of Worlds is in the same spot that Ryback once occupied during the initial days of his career. Creative booked The Big Guy as a wrecking ball, but lost at every PPV match. The only thing keeping Wyatt away from the same fate as Ryback is his solid mic skills and character antiques. But there is an expiry, even for this. Fans continue to get disappointed with what happens eventually, which sees Wyatt promise chaos and destruction, but gets pinned when it matters the most.

Wyatt promised the fans to take out The Viper; his inner demons intending to tame the voices in Randy Orton’s head. While it was rather unfortunate that Orton couldn’t compete, what happened afterwards zeroed any momentum Wyatt had created for himself with this feud, by facing Kane for the third time in his career.

As far as building a monster in Wyatt was concerned, creative managed to do a good job until later in the night. Earlier in the show, the former Wyatt Family leader attacked and injured Orton’s leg rendering The Apex Predator to be unable to compete. Wyatt took a beating from Kane initially but managed to take the Big Red Monster down with a senton on the announcer’s desk.

Everything was fine until Orton showed up, and RKO’d Wyatt. Kane took full advantage of the opportunity, and managed to get the winning pin. Weeks of build up, promos and booking went down the drain. On top of that, the WWE universe witnessed Bray take another PPV loss.

Smackdown’s roster needs more talent for the main event scene. Ziggler, Styles, and Ambrose cannot hold that fort for long. Now that The Phenomenal One won the title, he needs new foes and rivalries. While a match with Cena would seem like a good option, Smackdown has to come up with better ideas than that.

Before the draft, a face turn for Bray Wyatt seemed to be on the horizon. Perhaps, creative should put more thought into that. Wyatt is a future WWE champion and the longer the company waits to pull the trigger on him, the thicker that glass ceiling is going to become. The new era needs the new Face of Fear now more than ever.
