WWE Fastlane 2017: Goldberg Doesn’t Need Universal Title for WrestleMania 33

Fastlane is Goldberg’s first chance to win a WWE championship in over a decade. But does he really need a title heading into WrestleMania?

At Fastlane on March 5, Goldberg challenges Kevin Owens for the WWE Universal Championship. It’s Goldberg’s first title match in WWE since December of 2003.

Regardless of the outcome of that title match, Goldberg already has a huge match set for WrestleMania 33. He accepted the challenge of Brock Lesnar for a final match in their series. Now that he’s up 2-0 on Lesnar, the former WCW star is looking to complete the hat-trick on the biggest stage in WWE.

If Goldberg wins the Universal Championship at Fastlane, it will raise the stakes even higher for Lesnar-Goldberg III. But is it really necessary to do that?

In the grand scheme of things, a Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match should be enough of an attraction. It sells itself just based on the spectacle of the thing. Both men are household names at the end stages of legendary careers.

Don’t forget that the most recent match between Goldberg and Lesnar was the main event of Survivor Series. With SmackDown Live and Raw battling it out all night, plus two championship matches on the card, the prestigious headlining spot went to these two. Clearly, they can sell a match just based on name recognition.

If the match is as big as it is without a championship involved, why mess with it by adding a title to the contest? Kevin Owens has spent the last two weeks reinventing himself. But if he doesn’t hold the Universal Championship heading into WrestleMania, what is there for him to do at the Show of Shows?

Owens is the kind of superstar who could greatly benefit from being involved in a world title match at WrestleMania. That title is the difference between a mid card match for maybe a secondary championship, and a main event caliber match for a world championship. But if Goldberg wins the Universal Championship at Fastlane, his main event match remains a main event match.

Shocking as it may be to suggest it, the WrestleMania main event does not need a world title to elevate it to “main event status.” It doesn’t get much bigger than Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar (come on, you know it’s going to be the main event). The best thing to do is leave the Universal Championship with Kevin Owens to elevate his WrestleMania match. Let Goldberg and Lesnar have their match just based on star power – it’s absolutely enough to sell the match on.
