WWE: Does Alexa Bliss Have Credible Challenger for Women’s Championship?
By Tom Thomas
After Alexa Bliss won back her Women’s title, WWE SmackDown creative would need to come up with a new challenger from the Women’s division.
Injuries would once again derail creative’s plans as WWE SmackDown Women’s champion Naomi was forced to relinquish the title this past week. However, general manager Daniel Bryan would quickly find an alternative. He booked a match between Alexa Bliss and Becky Lynch; both of whom were former Women’s champions. Ultimately, Bliss would win the match and her second title on the blue brand.
However, Bliss winning the title could only be thought of as a temporary fix. Essentially, creative have booked themselves into a corner at the moment. Any champion is solely defined by the challengers they face. As it stands, Bliss does not have one at the moment. We could dig into the Women’s division in the blue brand, but unless creative pulls out a booking miracle, there are no credible contenders for the title.
On the top of the list, one could always point out Lynch. However, she is presently engrossed in a feud with Micky James. Moreover, the credibility of both those performers has ensured that the title need not be on the line for this feud to work. Also, cramping the Women’s title into this program would probably seem like over-shooting it.

Right below are Natalya and Nikki Bella. The two would take part in a Falls Count Anywhere match on Tuesday night to seemingly end their rivalry. However, where one feud concluded, another one is set to pick up. The dreaded mixed tag match involving John Cena, Bella, the Miz and Maryse could very well be in the works. Though, on the flip side, this would free Natalya.
On the bottom of the card lies Carmella who has subsided into oblivion. Moreover, much like Natalya, Carmella is another heel. It has been proven time and again that a heel vs heel feud for the title never goes the right way. This would leave the creative team to look for alternate plans and in quick turn around time as well.
Natalya is always a safe bet when it comes to the in-ring part of any match. Turning her face all the sudden would require her to pull off some kind of a miraculous promo at this point. However, she would often over-shoot her promos. Hence, creative’s only other logical option would be to turn Bliss face. Considering the amount of heat she has generated for herself after this week’s promo, that is harder than ever.
With limited options in the Women’s division as it stands now, something has to be done differently. Perhaps someone from NXT could be called up. But neither Asuka nor Ember Moon are in a position to be called up now. Daniel Bryan could try to trade someone from Raw in a surprising move. Imagine the pop it would generate if someone like Sasha Banks suddenly appeared during a SmackDown episode.

When all is said and done, the truth is creative has booked themselves into a tight corner. They would have to come up with some out of the box ways to ensure credibility to the Women’s championship and Alexa Bliss. The weeks ahead should point us towards the right direction eventually.
