Kurt Angle

Speaking of repurposed music, “Medal” may be most associated with Kurt Angle, but it was initially used by another American hero – “The Patriot” Del Wilkes.

It wasn’t too long after The Patriot left WWE that Angle made his debut; roughly two years had passed. But Wilkes had only spent around a year in WWE, and Angle would go on to a Hall of Fame career, so it’s little wonder that “Medal” is more associated with the Olympic hero.

Everything about the theme just screams “U-S-A! U-S-A!” The big, brassy introduction is like a modern take on a Sousa march – lots of trumpet melody with a trombone/tuba bed for it to lay on. And, because the theme made its debut as the Attitude Era was kicking into gear, there’s just enough of a rock groove behind it to give it that “cool” vibe. (Look, I’m a trumpet player and think brass music is cool, but I totally understand why Jim Johnston would want to add some guitars and stuff to the background.)

The theme on its own is tremendous, but the audience participation that has accompanied it for the better part of Angle’s career takes it a step beyond. Kurt can’t walk into a building to his theme song without being (lovingly) serenaded with chants of “YOU SUCK!” in tune with the theme.
