WWE: What Does the Future Hold for Chad Gable?
By Tom Thomas
What does the future hold for Chad Gable on WWE SmackDown? Would he be able to make it on his own as a singles performer or would he get lost in the shuffle?
Chad Gable would face off against Rusev this week on WWE SmackDown Live. Though the former tag team champion failed to beat the Bulgarian Brute, he looked good in the ring. In fact, Gable couldn’t have looked any better in defeat than he did last night. For a moment during the match, he had the crowd super hot for him. The spot where he had the Angle Lock locked brought back a wave of nostalgia than anybody else ever could.
Seeing as how well Gable performed against Rusev, creative should put some more attention into this young man. Gable already competed against the likes of Kevin Owens and AJ Styles in some really good matches. The former member of American Alpha has every bit of talent to hang in with the best SmackDown Live can offer. Moreover, last night, he looked like a real champion in the makings out there.
Gable pulled out a variety of big moves that brings one back to the good old days of Kurt Angle. The German Suplex into the Pin spot was smooth and so was the transition between the suplexes. In fact, I for one feel like he should use the triple German Suplex that transition into a pin as his finishing move along with the Angle Lock. Moreover, with the addition of a perfectly executed Moonsault off the top rope, Gable easily has another option for a finishing move. If that doesn’t spell out a well-crafted singles performer, I don’t know what would.
Ever since Jason Jordan’s paternity storyline started, I’ve been feeling like the angle was being wasted on the wrong member of American Alpha. It goes without saying Gable has been the more charismatic wrestler of the two. Moreover, he has been doing the talking for the team from the beginning. Jordan has always been the power house who receives the hot tag and clears up the ring. Whereas Gable used to be the one who carried the match for his team.
As the two have embarked on their respective singles careers, this ridge in their abilities is starting to show more and more. Jordan has been struggling on the mike and in the ring. It is still too early to judge him but Gable, on the other hand, has firmly established himself. His interview with Rene following Jordan’s move to Raw was short and to the point. Whereas Jordan often comes across as a bland babyface in most of the interviews I’ve seen him since.

As I said before, I felt the push was being given to the wrong member of American Alpha. As such, I feared Gable would be the Marty Jannetty of this generation. However, as the weeks pass by, I am being lead to believe that Gable would come out on top eventually. For once, every week the fans would watch Gable fighting for his place as a singles performer. The more they witness his struggles and his evolution, the more they will feel connected to him. Gable is still evolving. His move-set is great but not enough to earn him a victory. But soon he will pile up those wins using his variety of moves. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win the United States title at some point in time. For some reason, Gable as the United States Champion just clicks.
Moreover, it feels every bit like Jason Jordan is being handed off opportunities on a silver platter because Kurt Angle is his storyline dad. That thought would be enough to get Gable over as a performer. When you compare the two members of American Alpha alone, Jordan is WWE’s golden boy at the moment and Gable is the one having for fight for his place. As long as it stays that way, and as long as Gable brings his A-game to the ring, he will not be another Marty Jannetty.
