WWE SummerSlam 2017: Will John Cena Put Baron Corbin Over?

John Cena vs Baron Corbin has been added to WWE SummerSlam 2017 card. Is this a random pairing or is there something else at play?

WWE SummerSlam 2017 is less than two weeks away now. However, the match card is still taking shape. One of the latest matches to get added to the card is John Cena vs Baron Corbin. This would get confirmed after Corbin interrupted Cena during his promo. On paper this seems like a generic match since neither of these guys have nothing else to do. There hasn’t been an explainable level of animosity between these two either. However, is there something bigger at play here?

More importantly, will Cena put Corbin over at WWE SummerSlam 2017? The possibility for this can’t simply be ruled out though. A few days ago, Wrestling Inc reported that Cena could be moving to Raw soon. To quote from the article:

"Cena will actually stop working SmackDown televised events with the SummerSlam go-home show on Tuesday, August 15th. After that, he is only scheduled to work Monday Night RAW tapings and RAW pay-per-views."

SummerSlam could possibly be Cena’s final appearance for SmackDown Live. Seeing as superstars from both shows would be there, the lines above make even more sense. If that be the case, Corbin could be the one to go over Cena. It would help to build him up as a bigger heel on Tuesday nights. Moreover, Corbin holds the Money in the Bank briefcase. The Lone Wolf needs to stay relevant in order for his eventual cash-in to be successful and memorable.

More from Summerslam

While a cash-in at SummerSlam seems like an intriguing option, it might not necessarily be the case. For one, the event is at Brooklyn and if anyone deserves to cash-in that night, it is the Princess of Staten Island, Carmella. Moreover, James Ellsworth just returned as well. All these signs point to Carmella cashing in her contract at SummerSlam and winning the Women’s title. Another cash-in from Corbin the same night would be a wasted opportunity.

WWE should instead wait on Corbin’s cash-in moment and let him tease it for a number of weeks until then. Having Nakamura in the title picture is a good place to start things off. He and Corbin have a beef with each other. However, before building on that, Corbin needs to generate some momentum and heat for himself. There is no better way to do it than beating Cena by means of whatever methods and sending him off to Raw. He could then brag that he beat Cena so badly that the 16-time champ had to switch brands.
