WWE Superstars British Strong Style Win King of Trios Tournament

British Strong Style – Pete Dunne, Trent Seven, and Tyler Bate – won CHIKARA’s three day tournament this year.

Labor Day weekend is home of two big independent wrestling tournaments. Out in Reseda, CA, hundreds of die hard fans pack out an Elks Lodge to watch PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles. The other tournament is run by CHIKARA, and it’s King of Trios.

For the first time, Trios took place outside the United Sates in 2017. The event was held in the United Kingdom, so the promotion featured many British wrestlers. The most notable trio to be included from that group: WWE UK Champion Pete Dunne, Trent Seven, and Tyler Bate, better known as British Strong Style.

For much of the past year, BSS has been under a unique WWE contract. The three are centerpiece talents of the forthcoming WWE UK show. Bate was the first WWE United Kingdom Champion, defeating Dunne in the final of that tournament. Dunne returned the favor by besting Bate at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in one of the best WWE matches of the year.

With that said, it’s somewhat surprising to hear the news out of the UK this afternoon. British Strong Style defeated Sendai Girls – last year’s winners – to become 2017 King of Trios. Obviously, it’s not surprising that BSS would win. But for WWE superstars to win an independent wrestling tournament? That’s something that doesn’t happen too often.

Personally, I subscribe to the theory that CHIKARA – like Evolve and Progress – have a close working relationship with WWE. CHIKARA owner Mike Quackenbush spent some time at the WWE Performance Center as a guest coach in 2016. Seven and Bate are former tag champs in CHIKARA, as well.

Whatever the case may be, it’s unusual for WWE Superstars to be another promotion’s biggest focus. King of Trios is CHIKARA’s WrestleMania, for all intents and purposes. 2017 is a wild time for wrestling fans.
