The Case for Emma

Emma’s greatest hope for victory at No Mercy is that sweet plot device WWE like to throw around, whether it’s warranted or not: the swerve. No one is giving Emma a hope or a prayer in the Fatal Five-Way. That’s precisely the environment where WWE can go against all better judgement and crown Emma Raw Women’s Champion.

She definitely has her qualities. A competent in-ring worker with a decent villainous gimmick, Emma’s problem certainly isn’t on her end. It’s simply that everyone ahead of her is holding down their place. Plus it would be a nice reward for someone who has cultivated their own following, mostly through her belligerent tweets at WWE management.

Emma also has a secret weapon. The Jinder fiasco on the blue brand has raised a lot of questions about what WWE deems ‘marketable.’ But the fact is that aside from those who enjoy her work and Twitter presence, Emma has also tapped into her vast native fanbase.

Australia represents an enormous market for the WWE, yet they have no real Aussie stars. As their recent Pacific tour showed, Emma can be the babyface, nationalistic Champion if the company let her. But in reality, WWE might be easing off on pushing into new markets via crowning World Champions. For what it’s worth, Emma would be a better fit leading the charge in Oz than Jinder was in India.

Next: Winners and Losers From Raw

If WWE pull the swerve at No Mercy, they could follow it up with a strong heel Champion leading Raw. But with such a stacked division, and the imminent arrival of Asuka and Total Divas, WWE will likely go the safe route.
