THUMBS UP!

Sami Zayn

Sami Zayn’s promo on Daniel Bryan was outstanding. Not only because of how utterly devastating it was, but because of Sami’s character work. You know how heel turns often go, right? The usually happy babyface will suddenly begin scowling in the ring, he’ll become all curmudgeonly and everything will be super serious. Heel Sami is basically still Face Sami but saying things (truths?) that are just really uncomfortable and/or genuine. That, my friends, takes a lot of natural talent to pull off something like that.

And then he pins Randy Orton clean? Freaking awesome.

Those segments, though

Hey, did you read my other article regarding the top 5 best segments on SmackDown Live? If you did, then you probably already know how I feel. Most of the segments on SmackDown were really strong and compelling and three of them were home runs. Great character work, spot-on storytelling and motivated talent makes for a really fun show.

AJ Styles back in the WWE Title picture

AJ thrust back into the WWE title scene was not only a nice surprise for all of us who fill up on rumors and speculation and were fully expecting the Lesnar challenge, but it’s also where AJ belongs.

Echoing what I said in my previous article, let’s not dwell on whether or not AJ will win the title or not, but rather find solace in this: if there is one man in the entire WWE roster who can squeeze a great match out of Jinder Mahal, it’s AJ.

BUT, MY GRIPE…

Nothing really happened with the tag teams this week

Remember last week during the Us-Truce segment between the Usos and the New Day when all of the tag teams on SmackDown Live came out? I really felt that we were on the verge of a brand new, exciting focus on the tag division. Because I don’t know if you noticed last week, but SmackDown Live has a lot of really good tag teams.

So yeah, I’m disappointed that there wasn’t much more done with that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that BenjaGable are getting a shot at the Usos and a Rusev & Aiden English vs. the New Day program has great potential. I guess I was expecting that momentum to continue over from last week. Shame. There is depth in the tag team division on the blue brand.

So which one of the two shows wins for the week?
