WWE SmackDown: Breezango Needs to Return to Action

One of WWE SmackDown’s most over acts needs to return to in-ring action, or they run the risk of not being taken seriously.

Tyler Breeze and Fandango deserve an immense amount of credit for what they’ve achieved on WWE SmackDown.

The duo once reserved for jobbing on the bottom of the card took advantage of an opportunity, and in turn became one of the brand’s most entertaining pieces. Like most teams, Breeze and Fandango needed time to gel. But they eventually hit their stride, and haven’t looked back since.

Breezango utilized a series of backstage skits titled “The Fashion Files” to showcase their personalities and develop more character.

The transformation happened in the same way John Morrison and The Miz added character depth with “The Dirt Sheet” in the late 2000s. The gimmick has evolved, as The Ascension have joined the fray as –even more–comic relief.

To say the WWE struck gold with Breeze and Fandango’s work would be a severe understatement. The duo’s killed their backstage segments, with very few duds airing on Tuesdays.

But despite the increasing popularity of “The Fashion Files,” Breezango needs to start returning to in-ring action on a regular basis.

More from SmackDown

If it feels like it’s been awhile since you saw the two actually appear in a match, it’s because it has been.

The team last competed on television on Oct. 10 in a fatal four-way match to determine the No. 1 contenders to the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. It actually felt like a rarity to see Breezango return to the ring after spending so much time backstage.

One could argue that as a novelty act, sporadic in-ring appearances work. And if Breezango weren’t catching on with fans and the gimmick were falling flat, then that would certainly be a fair point. However, these two guys are arguably SmackDown‘s second most over tag team.

The issue with being mostly backstage banter is the risk of fans forgetting what they can do in the ring. Out of sight, out of mind, after all. So while the segments are enjoyable, fans may stop taking the duo as seriously when they step back into the ring.

It’s almost like if Edge and Christian only did five-second poses, and didn’t compete on a regular basis. They still would’ve been entertaining, but they would’ve been remembered as a one-sided, entertainment-only act.

It looks like the plan is to indeed have Breezango feud with the re-debuting duo of Erick Rowan and Luke Harper (now known as The Bludgeon Brothers). If that’s the case, it’s going to be hard to take the Fashion Police that seriously. Fans seldom see them actually winning matches, so on paper they’re going to be no match for the behemoths.

At the very least, WWE should feature Breezango beating teams like The Colons or The Hype Bros before pairing them with The Bludgeon Brothers in an effort to help build them up again.
