Xavier Woods: There Could Be Life Beyond The New Day

facebooktwitterreddit

The New Day are putting together one of the most successful and unique runs any faction has had in WWE history.  The heartbreak caused by the eventual fracture of the group is going to be wrenching, and Xavier Woods should be left with unicorn blood on his hands.

One could make the argument that Big E and Kofi Kingston have taken the majority of the ring time allotted to The New Day since their inception in July 2014.  But many have been reminded while witnessing New Day’s feud with The Usos that Xavier Woods can compete with just about anyone in the ring. This has even been mentioned by both Edge and Christian on “E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness”.

WWE has often mentioned the pristine educational background that Woods holds (he has earned his PhD in Educational Psychology), but in the context of the New Day, that gets lost in the shuffle. It’s not only due to their flamboyance, but also by the fact that his counterparts have held singles gold before the faction’s formation.

Someone with the pedigree of Xavier Woods should eventually realize his individual worth, and when he does, unicorns will weep.

The New Day has proven to be one of the most beautiful mistakes in professional wrestling history.  Their debut could not have been more negative, as fans booed at the idea of being force-fed three more smiling babyfaces.  After a successful heel run, though, their appeal could not be ignored. They are loud, obnoxious, and almost too good at being loud and obnoxious, evidenced by the continued white-hot fan support.

More from WWE

Despite the support and merchandise sales, Kofi Kingston and Big E still tend to receive more of the attention than Xavier Woods.  Any Woods solo run has the potential to mimic the New Day’s heyday – the heel who is so good at being bad that he organically becomes good. While Kingston and Big E may get the majority of the ring time, Woods is the clear mouthpiece of the group.  Being the main talker of a group that has been arguably the most successful act in the last two years of the WWE gives him motive to realize his own greatness. And an awesome heel should be born.

Keeping with his comic book nerddom, Woods would be ideal in the role of WWE’s “Brainiac.”  Brainiac is a villain of Superman lore who is highly intelligent and absorbs entire planets.  In his heel turn, Woods can claim to have absorbed the “power of positivity” by betraying his New Day mates, rendering Big E and Kofi Kingston free of the mojo that accompanies anyone who subscribes to it.  This could start as appearing to be a silly attempt at comedy a la Fashion Files. But Xavier Woods would need to end the feud by committing a truly vicious act, one that may need to include some blood.

In other words, when Xavier Woods picks his spot, in needs to be absent of comedy, color (not counting the possibility of blood), dancing, and certainly even a remote sense of positivity.  Much like Seth Rollins turning on his Shield bretheren, Woods needs to put the proverbial bullet in the temple of his.  What we should be left with is a hybrid of Edge and The Miz, a master of manipulation, but not above seeking minions to do your dirty work.

This article is a blatant attempt at fantasy booking; I won’t even begin to deny that.  The reason for the fantasy booking is the recognition that there is could be a higher level of greatness available for Xavier Woods, a performer others might see as being unassuming.  Xavier Woods is a charismatic character, and is beyond being worth his salt in the ring.  He was outstanding years ago as Consequences Creed in TNA, and his game has escalated since being a member of New Day.

Professional wrestling is always its most fun when fantasy is blurred with reality.  Before long, Xavier Woods needs to realize that his pedigree should plant its overbearing thumb on the unicorns, Booty-O’s, and other nonsense spewed (his future words, not mine) by the New Day.
