Everything About CM Punk vs. The Undertaker, WrestleMania 29

There’s a lot of ways to look at the Punk/Undertaker match at WrestleMania 29. On the one hand, it’s a culmination to a terrific story. But on the other hand, it’s a disappointing look at what might have been.

Roughly nine months before WrestleMania 29, Punk had turned heel at the prospect of The Rock once again returning to WWE. The fears Punk had would come to fruition at the Royal Rumble, when he lost the WWE Championship to Rock. After failing to regain the title, or get a chance to face Rock again at WrestleMania, Punk set his sights on the Undertaker.

A deeply personal feud broke out after Taker’s manager and mentor Paul Bearer passed away. Punk disrespected Bearer at a tribute segment on Raw, and eventually he would steal the urn that was Bearer’s trademark. Rather than return the item to Undertaker, Punk disguised himself as a druid and attacked, dumping the contents of the urn onto the Dead Man.

After being played to the ring by Living Colour, Punk brought everything he had to Taker. At this point, The Streak was still alive, and many felt that this match would determine how long it would continue. Sitting at 20-0 entering the match with Punk, it seemed like a nice round number to end things at for Taker – but a victory could indicate The Streak might never end.

In what was clearly the best match of the night (though not without competition), Taker of course kept The Streak alive. Bodies crashed through tables, Paul Heyman got involved, Punk mocked Taker – but nothing mattered. At the end of the match, Undertaker reclaimed the urn for himself, restoring Bearer’s legacy.
