WWE SummerSlam 2018: Becky Lynch Needs Charlotte to Thrive

facebooktwitterreddit

In a matter of a few weeks, Becky Lynch’s WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship hopes have decreased thanks to the addition of Charlotte Flair to Becky’s match at WWE SummerSlam 2018.  Yet, Charlotte’s actions on Sunday could be the driving force going forward that Becky needs to become the top female superstar in WWE.

Let’s start with how this SmackDown Women’s Championship match became a triple threat at WWE SummerSlam 2018.  A few weeks back, it was Charlotte Flair who saved Becky Lynch from a sneak attack that was executed by current champion Carmella.

As a reward, SmackDown General Manager Paige booked a win and you are in (to the championship match at SummerSlam) match for Charlotte against Carmella.  When Charlotte came up victorious it lowered the chances of the fan favorite, underdog Becky Lynch, from walking out of SummerSlam the SmackDown Women’s Champion.

There is so much that is convenient for Charlotte in this scenario, between the timing of The Queen’s return to being booked immediately into a championship match.  As the WWE Universe has made clear throughout the years, the chase is extremely important in relation to the level of support a superstar will get from the crowd.

In this case, Charlotte has become the female face of WWE, and what is even more apparent is that she has full backing of WWE Management.  This has been made abundantly clear based off her number of championship over the past few years, and also being the superstar hand picked to end Asuka’s streak.

Once the support of WWE officials for a superstar becomes blatantly clear, fans tend to resist cheering that same superstar going forward.  All of these extra opportunities that Charlotte has had is a perfect part of the story heading into SummerSlam.

There are numerous possibilities for the ending of the SmackDown Women’s Championship match at WWE SummerSlam 2018, but the key is that Charlotte must be victorious.  The way that Charlotte wins is just as important, as well.

Imagine Becky appearing to have the match won, goes for the cover, and then Charlotte quick tosses the Irish Lass Kicker out of the ring and covers Carmella for the win.  Immediately Charlotte becomes a heel, because she not only cost Becky the championship, but wins based off of the hard work of Lynch.

The story then shifts to the fact that Becky was cheated out of the SmackDown Women’s Championship, and that narrative alone gets heat for Charlotte.  This removes the need for a forced angle where Charlotte needs to attack Becky.

With a loss, the WWE Universe will rally around Becky that much more.  The best type of emotion that an underdog babyface can evoke from fans is sympathy.

What is more sympathetic than a workhorse superstar who just barely keeps coming up short?  The concern from many members of the WWE Universe is that Becky Lynch could receive the same treatment that Dolph Ziggler got between 2015-17.

I would personally compare it more to the historic underdog story that Daniel Bryan had in 2013-14.  The reason being is that Becky is competing in a big match similar to Bryan just five years ago, and the plan shouldn’t be for her to lose every week on WWE television like Ziggler.

The WWE Universe gets disinterested in a superstar when they lose consistently, but coming up just short of a major championship?  That disappointment will just drive fans to support Becky that much more.

Combine the fact that both superstars have been advertised on SmackDown Live as best friends, and it just adds that much more of a personal element.  Becky Lynch might be the most popular member of the Women’s Division already, but who says she can’t become even more popular?

It all starts with continuing the chase for the SmackDown Women’s Championship, and giving Becky Lynch her greatest challenge yet.  If The Irish Lass Kicker wants to become champion, it starts with outlasting The Queen, and ultimately beating Charlotte Flair.
