How To Read American Betting Odds
For my articles on Daily DDT, I will use an American betting odds system. Here is a quick overview (and fractional odds conversion) for how American betting odds look:
A “favorite” is given a negative number. This is the amount of money that needs to be placed on that competitor to win $100. For example, if someone is a -300 favorite, you need to bet $300 to potentially win $100. If you win the bet, you get $400 back (your original $300 and your $100 profit). If you lose the bet, you lose your $300.
-300 = 1/3 in fractional odds.
An “underdog” is given a positive number. This is the amount of money you will WIN so long as you bet $100. For example, if someone is a +450 underdog, you need to bet $100 to potentially win $450. If you win the bet, you get $550 back (your original $100 and your $450 profit). If you lose the bet, you lose your $100.
+450 = 9/2 in fractional odds.
Understanding Implied Odds
One way to quickly translate betting odds is to understand how they convert to implied odds. I’ve included a list of popular betting lines below alongside their implied odds.
Even and/or +100: 50%
-110: 52.38%
-120: 54.45%
-200: 66.67%
-300: 75%
-500: 83.3%
Fun Fact: The Undertaker opened as a -3000 favorite over Brock Lesnar for their Wrestlemania XXX match. That number climbed all the way up to -5000 (98.00%) the day of the event. At 6:15 PM, the line swung to -1200 indicating gamblers knew what the rest of the world would find out in a few hours: 21-0 was about to become 21-1.
WWE Super Showdown: Betting Odds
Odds as of 10/02/2018 at Oddshark.
Triple H (+115) vs. The Undertaker (-155)
Bobby Lashley and John Cena (-530) vs. Kevin Owens and Elias (+350)
Daniel Bryan (-265) vs. The Miz (+185)
The Shield (-350) vs. Strowman, McIntyre, and Ziggler (+250)
The Bella Twins and Ronda Rousey (-555) vs. The Riott Squad (+365)
AJ Styles (-140) vs. Samoa Joe (Even)
Cedric Alexander (+160) vs. Buddy Murphy (-210)
The New Day (-600) vs. The Bar (+400)
Asuka and Naomi (+155) vs. The IIconics (-195)
Becky Lynch (-215) vs. Charlotte Flair (+165)
Kevin’s Thoughts: In general, one of the things I will strive to do for future articles is to show my readers how the betting lines have evolved over time. For example, when the lines opened just one week ago, The New Day vs. The Bar odds were much closer to 50/50. A little over one week later, The New Day is -600 to retain their titles. Being able to see how the odds change over time can often give a much clearer view of where things are heading.
One interesting observation is how heavily favored Daniel Bryan is (-265 is about 70%) over The Miz in the #1 contenders match and yet AJ Styles is just a slight favorite over Samoa Joe. You would think a Daniel Bryan victory would cement a Samoa Joe victory just like a Miz victory would cement an AJ Styles victory. However, WWE does have AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan prominently featured for Smackdown 1000.
Buddy Murphy (-210) and The IIconics (-195) both have big advantages, both in their matchups and the hometown advantage. I can’t see WWE allowing either to lose in Australia. If WWE does plan on releasing women’s tag team championships, no better team than the IIconics to potentially compete for them. A win over Asuka and Naomi would be a big step in the right direction for them, even if it does continue to leave Asuka’s future uncertain.
There have been rumors of a Nikka Bella vs. Ronda Rousey matchup at WWE Evolution. WWE Super Showdown seems to be a perfect time to set this up. I can’t see WWE giving Ronda Rousey an L just yet, which means the match result is likely going to go the direction it is supposed to with some sort of aftermatch drama. Perhaps Nikki Bella is about to finish off the match when Ronda Rousey takes her glory?
Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair is an interesting matchup as well. I can’t think of a good storyline for Charlotte Flair to move into if she loses to Becky Lynch. Becky has many interesting opponents (e.g., Asuka, Naomi) if she were to win and have a lengthy run. That said, the “DQ win” is the unpredictable piece of so many of the odds. It’s entirely possible that Charlotte wins the match by DQ and Becky retains the title moving forward. This could be an intriguing matchup to bet the upset.
I would not go near a couple of the matchups no matter where the odds land. I’m surprised Bobby Lashley and John Cena are as favored as they are. Lashley’s WWE run has been anything but impressive and Kevin Owens and Elias are, to my eyes, two stars that are in need of a push to get back into the Universal title picture. I could see WWE pulling a fast one with this matchup. Similarly, I could easily see The Shield (-350) losing to Strowman, Ziggler, and McIntyre (+250) in a soft way to continue and push break-up storyline in the weeks ahead. Triple H vs. The Undertaker also seems like too much of a toss-up for me to go near.
Kevin’s Best Bet(s)
To make things fun, I will make at least three ‘best bets’ per article and keep track of my progress all the way through Wrestlemania XXXV. To be clear, I am not placing these bets. These are merely just for fun. Now that everyone knows how the betting system works, feel free to play along in the comments.
Bet 1: AJ Styles def. Samoa Joe ($140 to win $100)
Bet 2: Parlay*, Buddy Murphy def. Cedric Alexander and The IIconics def. Asuka and Naomi ($100 to win $123)
Bet 3: Charlotte Flair def. Becky Lynch ($100 to win $185)
*Definition, Parlay: A parlay is a bet that only pays if ALL bets win. If Buddy Murphy def. Cedric Alexander but the IIconics lose to Asuka and Naomi, the bet would be a loser.
