The Shield vs. Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, and Baron Corbin

The main event of WWE Fastlane saw the reunion of The Shield one last time to take on the trio of Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, and Baron Corbin. If you’ve seen any of the brutal matches The Shield has been a part of during their tenure in WWE, you probably have a good idea of how this one went.

There were probably questions from fans going into the night about Roman Reigns and his readiness for competition, but those were quickly answered. Things started as intended, but the action pretty quickly spilled outside of the ring. Roman Reigns looked as great as he always has, whether he was on offense or defense. The Big Dog didn’t appear to have missed a beat at all during his absence, and leukemia wasn’t stopping him from laying claim to his yard.

This match already had the emotional weight and benefit of Roman Reigns coming back and this potentially being Dean Ambrose’s last ride before leaving WWE, but it added to that by delivering a brutal contest that was truly representative of what The Shield have done in WWE. Whether it was impactful moves from Roman Reigns or something crazy like Seth Rollins flying off of balconies, everything we wanted to see was there.

As the action wound down and got back towards the center of the arena, it spilled back to the outside where McIntyre, Lashley, and Corbin made one last stand. They cleared a table and looked to drive Roman through it themselves, but Ambrose and Rollins broke it up. After disposing of Corbin and Lashley, they did the traditional Shield Bomb with extra force that drove McIntyre hard through the table.

Back in the ring, Baron Corbin was coming to and found himself surrounded by The Hounds of Justice. Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose carefully stalked Corbin as they made their way back into the ring before unleashing on him to close things out. Corbin ate a few moves before being hoisted up into the air for one final Shield Bomb. Roman Reigns covered him for the elementary count of three, and The Shield were victorious.

Grade: A++, This was the perfect ending to a great show. Seeing Roman Reigns back in his element like he hadn’t missed a beat was exactly as emotional as you’d expect, but this played like an excellently orchestrated homage to everything The Shield has meant over the years. From the traditional Shield gear to the balcony dive by Rollins, the Shield Bombs, the excitement by Rollins to end things, the fists together at the end. It was perfect.
