WWE SmackDown: Kofi Kingston is having one of the best WWE Title reigns in a while
The May 28 edition of WWE SmackDown saw yet another great match in a long line of great matches and moments in the long-awaited WWE Championship reign of Kofi Kingston.
Last night’s WWE SmackDown saw a Money in the Bank pay-per-view rematch when Kofi Kingston took on Kevin Owens. This time, in a non-title match just one week after Owens appeared to take out Big E backstage on the night that he returned from injury.
Kofi Kingston’s mindset will be on Dolph Ziggler at Super Show-Down, but first, he had to focus on KO and take care of business. This definitely turned out to be the best match of last night’s SmackDown and yet another stellar match of Kofi’s WWE Championship reign that began at WrestleMania 35.
It went back and forth for a while and at times, Owens controlled Kingston to the point where it felt like Owens was going to get the win. However, you can’t overlook the heart of a champion and Kofi Kingston just wouldn’t stay down. This proved to be the deciding factor in the match and after kicking out of the best KO had to offer, Kofi Kingston hit him with a Trouble in Paradise to get a big win to build momentum before his match with Ziggler.
Many wondered if Kofi would ever reach the pinnacle and capture the WWE Championship, but now that he has it, fans are quickly realizing that the moment isn’t too big for a Superstar that was labeled as a workhorse and a B-plus player for a long time. That’s what makes his current run so special given that it took him 11 years to finally get his chance to shine. Not only has he shined, but he has shined brighter than any other champion since WrestleMania 35.
Kofi has been a tremendous WWE Champion so far with countless great matches and moments along the way. He has been a fighting champion that competes on a weekly basis in high-quality matches after high-quality matches. This is what the WWE had been lacking on the Universal Championship side of things until Seth Rollins dethroned Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 35.
Just think about everything Kofi has done since becoming WWE Champion. He’s had matches featuring the likes of Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, AJ Styles and others since WrestleMania 35. He has competed in multiple title matches as well, including a solid feud with KO. Now, he’s even involved with Brock Lesnar to a degree with Lesnar holding the Money in the Bank briefcase.

For a title reign that was 11 years in the making, Kofi has already been one of the best WWE Champions in a long time. In an era where championships don’t necessarily mean as much and title reigns can be hit or miss, Kofi has turned back the clock to greater days of championship reigns. He waited a long time for the opportunity and he is not letting it go to waste.
Of course, it takes two to tango and he wasn’t having great matches alone, but Kofi has been helping make every Superstar he’s been in the ring with look like a million bucks during this run as well. There have been solid WWE Championship reigns in recent years, but there’s something about Kofi’s current reign that feels different from the rest. It feels fresher and more special given how long it took for him to reach the mountaintop.
Not to mention, he had what most consider to be the match of the year in the WWE so far at WrestleMania 35 when he won the title from Bryan. Hopefully, Kofi’s reign will continue to be as stellar as it has been so far and if anyone deserves a long title reign, it’s Kofi. The potential is endless for what he can do as WWE Champion moving forward with countless feuds and matches still possible.
No matter how long it took for Kofi to capture the WWE Championship, he is making every second as champion count and it has resulted in not only one of the best WWE Championship reign in a long time, but arguably one of the best in history.
