WWE King of the Ring Finals: Drew McIntyre vs. Kevin Owens

When all is said and done, there has to be a winner. And both Drew McIntyre and Kevin Owens have a fair claim to being crowned the 2019 WWE King of the Ring. So who has the better chances of gaining a crown at Clash of Champions?

Since returning to the WWE main roster, McIntyre has enjoyed an uneven tenure. His initial arrival was as an associate of Dolph Ziggler, and the two were a force to be reckoned with. But in slightly more than a year on Raw, the Scottish Terminator has only managed a single reign as Raw Tag Team Champion, and never seriously challenged for any other titles.

More recently, McIntyre was a lackey of Shane McMahon, which still produced no real forward momentum. Still, Drew’s size and strength make him a threat to any champion on the WWE roster. Cynthia Vespia at FanSided even said a King of the Ring victory would cement McIntyre as a top heel in the promotion.

How about KO? Owens was the second Universal Champion in history, and is the second longest reigning Universal Champion in history (some scrub named Brock Lesnar somehow held the title longer). KO is also a perennial challenger for just about any championship in WWE — at any point in time, he could be given a title match and no one would bat an eye.

And given the storyline, this is the most logical matchup for the finals. McIntyre is an ally of KO’s most hated rival — Shane McMahon. A victory by McIntyre is a victory for his boss; a victory by Owens is just one more victory for the “underdog.”

But at the end of the day, even with the immense fan support Owens is currently enjoying, I think we’ll get our fourth straight WWE King of the Ring to hail from the British Isles. Drew McIntyre should join William Regal (2008), Sheamus (2010), and Bad News Barrett (2015) in the Hall of Kings. Owens doesn’t need it, and McIntyre does, plain and simple.
