4. Kevin Owens’ “Shoot”

Let’s get this out the way: I detest shoot promos. I always felt like they were just a tired, dated means to blur the lines between reality and fiction in wrestling. But, if I had to point to one recent shoot promo that I actually liked, it was the one that Kevin Owens cut near the tail end of the summer.

This promo could not come any sooner as this was the pinnacle of when fans were becoming visibly agitated the more that Shane McMahon’s heel character was getting screen time as an authority figure. It’s usually a given for any heel authority figure to get a lot of screen time, but when fans felt like a villain with go away heat was preventing undercard wrestlers from receiving screentime, fans started to get fed up.

It felt so gratifying for fans when they saw Kevin Owens voice several of the WWE Universe’s same concerns, while also shouting out many of the Superstars (i.e. Buddy Murphy, Apollo Crews, Asuka, Kairi Sane, Authors of Pain, Liv Morgan, etc) who fans felt were being overlooked at the time.

It planted the seeds for a Stone Cold-esque role for KO against Shane (who was emulating his father’s heel role from years prior) and, eventually, the onscreen exit of Shane McMahon.
