Keith Lee

When Keith Lee took the pin in that NXT Championship number one contender’s triple threat match several weeks ago, I thought it was a mistake. After all, Lee had accumulated so much momentum – starting at last November’s Survivor Series – that it felt like it was time to give the man the push that fans had been clamoring for.

In hindsight, the NXT creative team made the right choice on that occasion given how the ensuing Adam Cole/Finn Balor match played out. So, they spared Lee the misfortune of jobbing to Cole on that night, but he still needed a signature win to show that he was more than the guy who creates GIF-worthy moments.

This past Wednesday, he got it. Opposite Dominik Dijakovic, Cameron Grimes, and Damian Priest, Lee participated in a Fatal 4-Way match to determine the next challenger to Roderick Strong’s NXT North American Championship in what was another stellar television main event for WWE’s “developmental” brand (are they still billing it as such?).

The match gave us plenty of highlights – Grimes’ amazing Standing Spanish Fly and Lee swinging Priest into Grimes and Dijakovic before powerbombing him on top of Dijakovic were among the highlights – but for fans who have waited to see Lee in a prominent title match, the best one came when he Spirit Bombed Grimes and pinned him in the middle of the ring.
