Hear me out. The Rhodes family are heels by nature. They are the most comfortable in a wrestling ring when they are playing the bad guy. Cody has seemingly found a sweet spot in his new role as the white meat babyface at the head of an international wrestling company but his brother Dustin most certainly has not.
Dustin’s career was built on being a weird, confusing and ambiguous character that could be as off-putting in the ring as he was awe-inspiring. His character is best served by turning heel fully and quickly. His most interesting and exciting angle so far in AEW came with his début as the scorned older brother to the golden boy only to be tossed away after the match to fall back into the family fold.
So what if he never actually came back in? What if by coming back into the family fold he put enough distance between himself and his cronies that he has removed all suspicion.
Why does the Dark Order focus so closely on the Elite? On Cody’s friends? Could it be as simple as the elite being the top baby-faced in the company? Sure.
Or does Dustin want to hurt Cody in his soul? To cause him to feel the pain Dustin felt when he was alone in the WWE without his family’s support? To make him feel truly alone? I’m not sure. But I can tell you where I’ll be every Wednesday night until I find out.
