On the Feb. 20, 2019 episode of NXT, the Velveteen Dream defeated Johnny Gargano to become the fourth NXT North American Champion. One could make a strong argument that the youngest champion in the title’s brief history was the best so far.

Dream held the title for 209 days, the longest reign to date. Even more, he boasts successful defenses against the likes of Matt RiddleMurphyTyler Breeze, Roderick Strong, and Pete Dunne. That’s an impressive resume.

In addition, the former NXT North American Champion notably did just as much to help WWE build a new legacy around the title before he won it. He was one of six men who competed in that excellent ladder match to crown the inaugural champion at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans.

Historically, midcard titles are litmus tests for competitors that the company could groom for a future world championship win. For example, many noteworthy Intercontinental Champions eventually won the WWE Championship.

Dream was an exceptional North American Champion. So, it would only make sense for him to follow in Gargano and Cole’s footsteps as the third man in the title’s lineage to go on to win the NXT Championship.
