WWE June 2020 Power Rankings: Randy Orton Has Reached Another Level of Greatness
By Mark Justice
5.) Rhea Ripley
Rhea Ripley had a tough month in NXT. Not only did she fail to recapture the NXT Women’s Championship but she may have to wait even longer to get her comeuppance on Charlotte Flair due to rumors of Flair taking time off until 2021. Nonetheless, she is now in a mini feud against Robert Stone and Aliyah, which should help her regain the babyface momentum she lost since losing the title at WrestleMania 36.
4.) Tegan Nox and Shotzi Blackheart
Tegan Nox and Shotzi Blackheart are a tag team the WWE fans did not know they wanted. After shining in their Women’s Tag Team Championship match against BayBanks, they have solidified their spot as a threat in the Women’s Tag Team Division. Hopefully, their loss to BayBanks was a ‘rub’ for them to become Women’s Tag Team Champions in the near future.
3.) Candice LeRae
Candice LeRae is in a weird spot in the NXT Women’s Division, but her recent heel turn alongside her husband, Johnny Gargano, has elicited some sort of buzz this month. Her history with Io Shirai would make for a compelling NXT Women’s Championship feud. However, she lacks momentum at the moment and needs to regain that momentum to become a more credible contender. She should continue her feud with Mia Yim before battling Io Shirai for the championship so that her eventual championship feud with Shirai can be worthwhile down the road.
2.) Dakota Kai (w/Raquel Gonzalez)
Dakota Kai‘s heel turn has not gained the momentum it should have gained this month. When she turned heel on Rhea Ripley’s War Games Team for leaving her out of the team, it would have been reasonable to assume that she would feud with and defeat Mia Yim, Tegan Nox, Candice LeRae, and finally Rhea Ripley over the course of her heel turn to gain the momentum she needs for an NXT Women’s Championship opportunity.
Unfortunately, that was not the case but she still remains one of the top heels on the show. Her recent victories on NXT clearly indicate that she is next for Io Shirai, which is unfortunate timing for Kai to earn a title shot considering that Shirai just won the belt. Despite the imperfect booking for her heel run, she still has a bright future in the WWE but her progression up the ladder will be gradual, rather than astronomical.
1.) Io Shirai
Io Shirai is the current NXT Women’s Champion. Her triple threat championship match against Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley in the main event of NXT Takeover: In Your House exceeded expectations. It’s been a long time coming because the majority of the WWE Universe have been fully behind a push for Shirai for quite a while now. NXT should have struck while the iron was hot with her last year, but it’s better late than never. NXT is now her show, and she has the championship to prove it.
