Sonya Deville vs. Mandy Rose can be the best feud in wrestling

On the July 27 episode of WWE SmackDown, Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose took their rivalry to another level.

A couple of months ago, Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose began feuding after a long-term tag team partnership, which somewhat surprisingly failed to yield a tag title run. But now, these two WWE SmackDown superstars have shown that they are on a trajectory to win world title gold with their excellent work as rivals.

Deville and Rose had a couple of hard-hitting matches in the ring, and wrestling fans were struck by the intensity and hatred in Deville’s words, which could be heard at the time without the Performance Center crowd in attendance.

This rivalry always had the potential to be special, and it was one of the most enjoyable parts of Friday Night SmackDown.

Now, though, Deville vs. Rose feels like an even bigger deal.

After taking time off television (and no, I am not going to speculate here), Rose and Deville returned on the July 27 episode of SmackDown with a memorable backstage brawl. The video for the segment is currently one of the top three most-viewed from the show, with only a title match and The Fiend attacking Alexa Bliss ranking higher.

For a mid-card feud with no title on the line, there is a LOT of interest in Deville vs. Rose, and even though the feud had to take a pause, it is in full force now.

That’s because of Deville’s actions in that segment. She took a pair of scissors and started lighting up Rose with strikes, too.

Deville is one of the most vicious heels in WWE, and she’s always had impressive submission holds and strikes with her MMA background. Those moves were on full display in this brawl.

But what was just as striking as the blows themselves was the pure derision in Deville’s voice. She hates Rose more than anything else on this earth. The contempt Deville has for her former tag team partner is so vile; she cannot stand everything that Rose stands for, and she often targets Rose’s looks.

So much so that she literally used the scissors to cut off Rose’s hair. Like, yeah, that happened. WWE fans watching the show live were in shock at what they were witnessing.

Deville’s actions have escalated this rivalry to the point of no return. This is the most personal feud in WWE right now, and there are quite a few candidates like Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio and Sasha Banks vs. Asuka.

And it’s personal not just because of the shocking segment with the scissors, but because of the heel work of Deville. You genuinely believe she is a dangerous, remorseless villain, and she shows that she can back up everything she says in the ring – and even outside of it.

Rose, of course, is worth praising highly as well, even if Deville is the one with the most potential due to her sheer all-around talent. While Rose was also a brutal heel with great power moves and improving promos, she has really come into her own as a babyface in the Otis storyline. Mandy is a strong babyface, who has played her role convincingly and did a good job of building genuine sympathy after the segment.

In the short-term, Deville starred the most in that segment, but if WWE and Mandy play their cards right, the coming weeks leading to comeuppance could be huge for Rose, who has generally been on the losing end of this feud, speaking in kayfabe. Both women should emerge from this as big stars, because WWE fans are so invested in the rivalry.

After Friday night’s events, things can somehow only escalate further, and that should leave fans excited. There are some great feuds on the Blue Brand right now, but Sonya Deville vs. Mandy Rose could be the one that we remember for years to come as the one that made two superstars.
